Sir Cliff Richard has admitted that he watches ITV’s X Factor and said that come of its contestants are “phenomenal singers.”

The Press Association quotes Cliff as saying that he thinks some of the stars are very talented, but he doubts they will still be around in 50 years time.

Sir Cliff said of the show: “It’s shown me that there are people out there who are really phenomenal singers.”

But he added: “It doesn’t mean they are going to be there in 50 years’ time. These young kids that come up now don’t get the support we did, but is anybody interested in being here in 50 years’ time? Maybe not, but they are good singers.”

For sure Cliff and I won’t be around in 50 years time.

So Cliff has had a change of heart.

He is right though on the score of television made careers, they are very short lived today.

Regards support I’ve been singing for 40 years the only support I’ve ever had came from my parents, who are now sadly no longer here and myself.

As a classical regional singer my career has been a lot longer than that of a tv personality but I will probably die with all of my music unheard by the nation.

For a guy with an average voice he sure has a lot to say, sometimes not all of it is useful.

Sir Cliff, I note some wisdom in what you had to say but also a good measure of concealed cynicism towards the entertainment/television machine of to-day. Would it not be a good idea if illustrious individuals of your standing, could give serious consideration to playing some role in the development of schemes or take some direct involvement in existing schemes to further promote the arts within the entertainment arenas? Yours and your fellow illustrious companion’s immense experiences would be so invaluable. Just a thought for you to ponder, before the remaining years slip away. Sir Cliff! Thank you.

I do notice that a lot of ageing artists can’t seem to retire early leaving the stage clear for new up and coming talent. Instead they hang around draining every last pound out of their fans and whatever the music industry is willing to pay them.

Some of these established artists could fund a talent competition or the careers of several wanabes. Afterall, someone somewhere did exactly that for them several decades earlier.

So puting all cynicism aside at least television is giving the talent show route some attention albeit for all the wrong reasons.
