A song which was a US Top 5 hit in 1963 is threatening to pip this year’s X Factor to the Christmas Singles Number 1 post!

The Trashmen’s ‘Surfin Bird’, which features in satirical cartoon Family Guy has almost half-a-million Facebook fans campaigning to get it to the top of the UK singles charts this Christmas and bookies Paddy Power, who have installed the catchy tune at 5/1, insist it can be done!

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power said: “Every year X Factor appears to have the Christmas Number One spot sewn up but last year proved that people are tiring of this. A ferocious online campaign saw Rage Against The Machine beat Joe McElderry to the top spot so it is possible! Surfin Bird is ridiculously catchy and if the campaign goes to plan it could quite easily be Number 1.”

The Surfin Bird Facebook page advises fans to wait until December 12 before buying the song to maximise its chances of repeating last year’s trick where Rage Against The Machine ended up Number 1 on Christmas Day.

Other music acts in the running to be top of the charts on Christmas Day include John Cage at 10/1 and Take That at 20/1!

Paddy Power has the latest odds:
