Was Danyl Johnson outed on tonight’s X Factor?

So Danyl Johnson comes out and steals the X Factor show tonight with an amazing rendition of ‘I’m Telling You.’ But what does he get? Praise? No. Compliments? No. He gets Louis calling him an unlikeable cocky b*stard (in so many words) and Dannii Minogue tells him that he shouldn’t have changed the gender reference in the song.

In other words don’t change the he to a she, because we all know you’re gay. There have already been rumours emerging that Danyl is bisexual, but whether thats true or not, I hardly think its relevant.

I was outraged at the treatment Danyl received, though at the back of my mind I am still wondering if the whole thing was staged to win Dan some sympathy votes.

I’m still in shock at the judges comments tonight and we have approached an X Factor spokesperson for a response to the comments. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything, but in the meantime, feel free to leave your comments below.

  1. Katie says:

I’m personally outraged at her comments. Myself and my family
rewinded the comments given to Danyl and were all shocked at
Dannii’s comments. This year has definittely been the most
competitive and IMO, it’s starting to get a bit too out of
hand. Not forgetting that Dannii was the one who made Sharon
crack and leave the show ( =[ ) but also the one who caused
a stir with Louis last year. I just think she knows nothing
about music and doesn’t deserve to be on the show – BRING BACK
    SHARON!

  2. John says:

Dannii just made Hasselhoff look like a worthy judge after that stunt. Nice coy attack on someone who can’t return the favour.

  3. Cesly says:

I was shocked and disappointed by Danni’s comment to Danyl. I had given her more credit for intelligence. Her comment was both inappropriate and irrelevant and I hope Danyl is not giving it a second thought. I had thought he was a little OTT, but last night’s performance was spot on. Nice one D.

  4. debbie n damien says:

we think what dani had to say was un called for and nothing to do with his singing, Danyl’s sexuality is irrelivant, he is an accomplished singer and is able to deliver an entertaining performance, he has our vote, if the whole concept of the x facor is to remain believable, then the public must be allowed to believe that it is a talent competition where by the most talented performer will win, Dani’s comments were an obvious attempt to destroy Danyl’s confidence to further her own ambitions within the contest.

  5. GK says:

Danni is clearly an idiot who had no concept that there is a time and a place to engage in social commentary about ‘playing straight’ , and doing so in an ambush fashion, on live TV, amidst a climate of ugly tabloid speculation was always going to be inappropriate, and humiliating for her victim, which is exactly what he became.

That lack of foresight is amateurish at best, and combined with her fairly unimpressive musical CV raises the question ‘what qualifies this lady to be on the most popular programme on British TV’ ? Its not heritage, and its professionalism, I’m guessing its her willingness to engage with the tackiest elements of British tabloid society, with was amply displayed tonight with her ‘if we’re to believe what we read’ comment….

Whats worse is that the speculation is that he’s bi-sexual, so which ever gender he choose to sing about would’ve been honest.

  6. Annette says:

I am outraged that she even thought of opening her mouth and dared to say that…….. disgusted… nearly threw something at the tv

  7. Chris S says:

Lets be honest, she is only famous because of big sis. What rights does she think she has to day something like that on live TV infront of millions of people. I felt so bad for him as you could see how embarrassed he was. She put him in such an arcward posiotion and when she was asked what she said…instead of reading the signs…she repeated it! I think she should make a public apology to Danyl on the show. And as for the Candy rain comment…what a hippocrite! I don’t disagree with the comment, but she was in no position to be the one making it!

  8. Dibder says:

It was an irrelevant comment with regards to his performance, which was good, not great, certainly better than most last night. Though she went about it the wrong way, I think Dannii was just disappointed that Danyl clearly changed the gender reference in the song so as not to alienate core viewers for votes, and tried to turn it into a little aside before Cowell assumed the position of bastion of outraged moral majority and demanded she repeat herself.

If he wasn’t “ashamed”, which is what he says on the clip, why did he change it? I have to say I am a little disappointed that the first openly gay X Factor contestant hasn’t stepped up to the plate with regards to how his sexuality should be addressed; not in a grandstanding “I’m Here!” way, but in an understated matter-of-fact way.

The outrage this has caused with everyone saying Dannii has “outed” him is also bull, for the fact that his bisexuality was made public after the very first episode (he had a full page ad in weekly gay magazine Boyz from his old workplace, Ku Bar in West London, wishing him well also!)… everyone remarking how outrageous Dannii’s comments were are also corroborating the fact that being gay is still a bit of a taboo. Plus, the last note at the end was a bit sharp; but still better than everone else last night! x

  9. Kaya says:

I have to say that i was not impressed but what Danni had to say, and then to repeat it twice…on LIVE television was just not acceptable.
at the end of the day they are not there to judge his sexuality, but his voice. and he delivered an amazing performance and has an absolutely great voice…end of.
I dont believe that he should have got such critism to be honest cos yeah he may be confident and a bit cocky, but this is the X Factor right?

  10. stu says:

ur all morons who think dannii was out of order ! … danyl sed in last weeks new of the world he was bi ! … we all knew it ! but y did he change the lyrics of his song from ‘him’ to ‘her’ ????… if he says he likes men then why change the lyrics unless he jus making it up and wants more votes frm gay guys like me !… anyway he’s a cocky asshole and he is NEVER going to win ! …

  11. mat says:

what can i say! the comments made by danni were wholly inappropriate.

lets put it this way – in a job interview, it is ILLEGAL to make comments on, or ask questions about race, colour, gender, religion, and sexual orientation.

considering that the x factor is one glorified job interview, this really needs to be addressed. it doesnt matter what danyl thinks of the comment. regardless of whether he was offended or not, that comment could be seen by some as being against the law.

  12. dave says:

Dannii is a great judge, and I’m sure a really nice person.. Give her a break. She’s only doing her job… Danyl is brilliant, but he does overcompensate somewhat!! Cocky? I don’t think so!! Bisexual or Gay? I do think so.. Does it matter? Not really… Will he win because of it? Probably.. Do we know what’s really going on behind the scenes? No! Are there millions of people around the country talking about Danyl, feeling sorry for him, voting him in? Probably!! Is it a piece of PR genius? YES!!!

  13. GK says:

    @ Stu.

Its not about the accuracy of the statement, its about the degree to which he wants his sexuality to be discussed and factored into his persona, perhaps you like being defined by your sexuality, it however shouldn’t be assumed others share that desire, and his reaction to her clumsy comment clearly showed he was uncomfortable with it.

Giving a statement to a journo in a bi-directional coversation is worlds apart from having to silently endure conjecture without the ability effectively respond. If he had responded defensively it would only have compounded the attitude problem accusations but thankfully Cowell clocked that and let Danni know how misplaced her thoughts were.

  14. laura says:

it doesnt matter whatever his sexuality is, danni was a spiteful cow towards him and i think simon is right and danyl is an amazing singer and should go all the way as he has true potential so danni just do one.

  15. Jan Tovey says:

Who the hell does Danni think she is. Daryl gave a great performance last night and what the hell does it matter if he is straight, bi or homosexual – It does not seem to have affected Will Young. What matters is he seems a nice guy and has loads of talent – anything else is his own business. The judges seem worse than ever this time and spend more time trying ‘one upmanship’ tactics than giving he contestants worthwhile advice and critique.

Well done Daryl – rise about it all and continue your great work!

  16. MrK says:

All the Danni haters have come out in droves!!!
She would never have meant to be disrespectful to him, she was trying to joke with him on his level. He outted himself weeks ago and someone with his confidence would not be knocked by what she said. She was like “hey that was cool, your cool and you know what your on about, you don’t need to change that, be yourself”, If a straight contestant sang that song No Probs, but a gay/bi one who changes the lyrics to be hetro WHY? He said he wasn’t ashamed so why do it in the first place?
The moment she said it you could see the penny drop: “Sh*t they don’t gonna get it” and she’s publicly apologised on her website and said she’s spoken to him and all is cool”, and I’m sure if she’s allowed to apologise on the show she will.
The biggest problem here though is not what was said but rather the publics reaction. She didn’t put a closet on the spot but joked with a confident male who happily disclosed his sexual preference with the tabloids, and offended all those brits with a stick up their behind who would rather not talk about it and sweep it under the rug. “Its a family show for christs sake, lets live in la la land and not speak of reality in prime time, meanwhile your kids are dropping LSD behind their school desk”. WAKE UP! And all those people who say its all about the perfomance (while flicking through hello magazine and the sun), it rarely is unfortunately! Hence the sob stories, family dramas etc… but we’ll exclude sexuality because it might mean less record sales!
Danni has always been respectful, thruthfull, honest and spot on with her comments. She’s edgy and unafraid to speak her mind and its a shame that you guys don’t get it! Why is sexuality such a taboo in a nation that is so amazingly diverse? Ma and Pa have a long way to go I think!

  17. Elle says:

Danyl was amazing, absolutely amazing ..he was in another league compared to the others.. and for louis walsh to fking critise Danyl when he put through John and Edward was bloody rich. ahhh and dont even get me started on bloody Danii. Omg what a bitch?! Who gives one about if hes gay or not how bloody dare you bring up his personal life.. i want her to make a bloody public apology to Danyl on her obvious Jealousy that he was better than all of her acts. They all said negative comments cos they were jealous. and that is soo unproffesional.. this guy is amazing so dont give us this shit .. and i dont really think it was staged? i mean why would it he was obviously better than everyone else. he doesnt need sympathy votes.. Simon Cowell is the only one who has it right.. and danyl hasnt got the likeable factor? are you kidding me louis fkin walsh? you put johnandedward through.. that says a lot. Arghhh its really annoyed me !! LOVE YOU DANYL

  18. Gays aren't offended says:

I’m surprised by the number of people saying Dannii’s comments were ‘rude’ and ‘horrible’ and ‘degrading’ – so now it’s ‘degrading’ to be called gay, is it? That says much more about your opinions on sexuality than it does about Dannii’s (who has been an open supporter of Gay and Lesbian rights for as long as I can remember.)
And she didn’t ‘out him’ – Danyl openly told the news of the world that he was bisexual.
If anything, she was being pro-Gay: she was telling him that, if he was really bisexual as he told the papers, there was no need for him to change the song lyrics to create the impression that he was straight, in order to win the girly vote.
She wasn’t basing his performance on his sexuality – she told him it was a ‘true x factor performance – that was just a side note she slipped in. Maybe it was totally irrelevant, but was it hurtful or homophobic, absolutely not.
Yes Danyl looked shaken up – anyone realize that he had this expression on before Dannii even opened her mouth, because Louis Walsh had just told him he was ‘unlikeable’ and ‘cocky’??
Talk about jumping on the media bandwagon.

  19. amelia says:

the judges said he was overconfident and cocky. to other ppl they say they need to believe in themselves. Soneone does- and they try to knock him down! All the best performers know they are fabulous. The judges are control freaks who want someone to fit their mould so they can build them up and say “the best thing about u is you don’t know how good you are”. BUT DANYL KNOWS HES GOOD AND SO HE SHOULD! and as for the sexulaity thing- its noones business. you would think someone famous would be more respectful of privacy and it was humiliating to do it in that way but i think she was trying to be funny and clever not nasty. Keep being confident Danyl you’re amazing- better still leave the show and make it on your own!

  20. amy says:

I totally agree with the comments been made.

Does Danni think that noting his sexuality is going to disencourage people not to vote for Danyl.

And Cheryl was brewing with jealously at that girl band,
how dare she be so hypocrytical,
what does she think that those good looking girls are going to be a threat to precious Girls Aloud, Calm Down love you dont always have to be the centre of everything.
and then put on this pretencious nice act,
There are allowed to be other good looking women than you! Get Over YOURSELF.

  21. Big boy says:

Ooooh Danyl’s gay :D Send him my way! Woo woo. Also, stu, where you from bigboy?

  22. birmingham101 says:

I’ve just made a complaint to Ofcom about Dannii’s behaviour.

Yes, the fact he is Bisexual has already been publicised in the press but it was no place of Dannii’s to bring it up in a music competition.

This is supposed to be family fun and for her to make such an irrelevant comment was disgraceful.

Many people did not know about his sexuality and for her to make reference to it was wrong, especially on a LIVE primetime show with around 10 million viewers!

She should make not just a public apology but a formal apology to Danyl too.

  23. Ann Kin-Cleaves says:

I was absolutely disgusted with the comments from the judges re Danyl Johnson’s performance on Saturday gone. Gender! What was all that about? Cocky – how did Danyl display being Cocky. I am totally lost. I felt that all three were having a go at Simon but werent brave enough to direct the insults to Simon himself but fired the gun between the eyes of a nervous Danyl. They should be ashamed of themselves and I hope and pray that Simon doesnt let them off with it. It has put me and my family off X Factor for good.

  24. hazel says:

dani was out of order last night commenting about danyl johnson.

  25. judges i hate uuuuu says:

right i dont think danyl was to 2 bothered about what dannii said the point is i cant realise how the judges can say what they said bouh him he sung to perfection it was an exciting performance unlike sum others…….

  26. la di da says:

omg think people are makin a big issue out of this. The performances on the show were mostly crap i fink the boys picked it up (joe, jamie and of course danyl) otherwise it was not as good as last year man i do miss JLS. lol

  27. paul says:

Danni should be sacked for her comments last night, his sexuality is nothing to do with his performance and to bring that up is both cruel and unnecessary. I felt sorry for the guy, how dare she say something like that! I doubt that she will get sacked (even though she should) but she should at the very least apologise live on tonights show.

  28. Angie says:

Come on people, get a life and get over it. Like it was such a big deal. Clearly she didn’t mean anything nasty by it. It’s not her fault you are all such empty morons. Boring, next!

  29. Dave says:

Talenless Ms Minogue only got where she is by trailing in her sister,s wake, made her viscous comments on realising that she was looking at the most likely winner of the show.
personally i,m hoping either Geordie kid, or dagenham girl wins

  30. John says:

HEY STU….. AFTER READING YOUR COMMENTS I AM GUESSING YOUR LAST NAME IS…. PID ?

  31. ciara says:

ok danni was wayy outta line sayin that about danyl last night it was just plain mean ! shes just after sayin on tonights show shes sorry but too late danni ! u said it ! and cheryl & louis werent dat nice either callin him cocky ? mean ? he preformed brilliant and didnt get any praise ! soorry judges but every1 agrees that u were plain mean to daynl last nite & it mite hav something to do wit jealousi of not having him in there group! danyl well done u were great ignore the judges !

  32. Gaz says:

It seems a lot of people making comments are being very hypocritical here. It’s like you’re saying it’s ok for Danyl to be bi/gay as long as no-one mentions it!

  33. Wendy says:

What kind of an apology was that?
Nobody asked Danyl to say how he felt about it. I think Dannii and Cheryl got off too light. Maybe someone could make a nasty comment about her or her performance next week, when she debuts her single ‘career’ such as it is!

  34. Ceri says:

It’s not even worth mentioning. Why did the tabloids make it a story? A person of any sexual orientation is equal to another person of any other. I just don’t understand what makes that so interesting. It’s not a bad thing, it’s not a better thing than any other sexuality…
Gah. There just wasn’t a point in saying it. Well, at least the X-Factor viewers havent been affected by that reveal (generally), he did stay in, as he deserved to.
I’m really hoping that either Miss Frank or one of Simon’s guys wins it. I’m sick of Leona Lewis types, and I can’t stand the boys. As for John and Edward… I won’t go into that rant today..

  35. Ceri says:

Ooh.. but I do like Stacey. She just makes me smile.
I do think she’d be different to Alexandra/Leona, she’s a differet kind of singer isn’t she..

  36. Danyl to win says:

Maybe people should be forced to take an IQ test before leaving comments.

As Danyl had already told the newspapers he was bisexual, Dannii was not outing him. Dannii, who with her sister Kylie, are huge supporters of gay people, was making a very PRO-GAY remark that Danyl’s fantastic performance might have been even better if he’d kept the song reference to a man.
I don’t know why Danyl changed it to a woman. Perhaps he thought some small-minded people might not like it as a gay song. Anyway, that was his artistic/political decision. And Dannii gave her opinion that it would have been nice to have it sung as a gay song.

2 different people: 2 different opinions. No big deal.

I’m not sure why Danyl looked so upset. Possibly because of the nasty remark Louis (and more moderately Ashley) made about him being cocky and unlikable.

But I think it was because he thought people might think he was a coward for changing the sex reference, and maybe because he thought Dannii thought that about him (although he has said to newspapers he wasn’t worried about what she said). He definitely wasn’t upset that he was “outed”, because he’s already out.

  37. patrick says:

danni opened her gob and brought a person’s sexuality into an arena which doesn’t have that aspect of people’s lives under focus, the show is supposed to be about singing. Danyl is gorgeous and lots of crap being launched in his direction just makes him more of a fav for gays and bis – who look after their own cos society doesnt.

  38. Andrea, 22 says:

GK: I totally agree with your comment. Particularly ur last point which shud have been addressed – He is bisexual so whether he sang it to a man or a woman, it still wud hav been true to himself. If he had sang “Youre the best MAN ive ever known…” etc, that would have generated a lot of controversy too, coz those of us who DONT read tabloid newspapers religiously wudnt have known what was going on.

  39. sam says:

We all define Danni’ comments differently, but if you sit back and ‘listen and look’ at her face when she said it, you can see that she is teesing/having a laugh with him. He (if you believe the papers) has talked openly about his sexuality, so his privacy* has been broken prior to her comments. So whats all the fuss/anger about? *Proverbs:
“One does not wash one’s dirty linen in public”
    So, who’s to blame?

  40. barbara nicholson says:

I totally agree. It was shocking and Dani’s comments in particular were personal and completely inappropriate. The only person who should feel embarrassed about it is her. Who cares about his sexuality and she should remember that his family are watching and keep her comments professional out of respect for them! He is a born performer, a fantastic singer and I think he is extremely likeable. Those judges knock people without confidence and then they do the same if you are confident. Dany is amazing and should receive praise and guidance on how to improve, not nasty personal comments. Top marks to him for not stooping to their level.

  41. barbara nicholson says:

Then why on the video can you see him clearly mouthing the words “I’m not gay”?????

  42. Gaz says:

@Barbara: He didn’t say that. He clearly said “I’m not ashamed” in response to something shouted from the audience. As for him looking upset – I don’t agree. He was shocked that Louis said he was unlikeable and only showed tearful emotion when Simon said his performance was outstanding as he was so happy to hear that.
