X Factor 2009, Week 5 – The Unreality TV Chart, Movie Week
Hello again, lovely blog readers! It’s that time of the night where we sit back and reflect on the performances that we saw. And yes, we sit in judgement, because we don’t trust everything that Louis Walsh says, and we know that Simon will give his own acts the highest praise.
But really, who were the best and the worst of X Factor’s Movie Week? Well, let’s review (and you can give your own opinions in the comments, as always!)
- Jamie Archer – Jamie sang a version of Crying from a little-known movie, but excelled by giving an emotional and powerful performance. He showed yet again that his strength might actually be outside of the rock style the show has lumbered him with.
- Lucie Jones – A relatively unknown song choice for Lucie tonight, which might cost her in the phone votes when people don’t identify with it. However, she managed a great, fun and confident stage presence tonight, which definitely bested her category-mate Stacey’s performance.
- Stacey Solomon – Stacey isn’t too far behind though. She looked sexy tonight and definitely put more effort into her routine, which deserves praise. A good vocal, but certainly not the best of her X Factor career.
- Joe McElderry – A safe performance from Joe tonight, but didn’t work for me. I got a terrible Gareth Gates vibe from him tonight which made me question whether he can cut it as a recording artist. Gates isn’t relevant today, so would Joe be any different?
- Olly Murs – Another fun performance from Olly, slightly on the cheesy side, but enjoyable. I almost placed him alongside Joe because he raises similar concerns: good performer, but can he sell records?
- Danyl Johnson – Ah, Danyl. I was totally prepared to give him a second chance tonight. But although his performance was confident enough, his rendition of Purple Rain was overwrought and horrible to listen to. It was almost an emotionless, 3rd rate boyband version of the song and a huge disappointment.
- Jedward – Enjoyable, but utterly pointless. Louis Walsh is going to have to face facts soon – if these two win the competition, The X Factor will have to change the prize (a record deal, in case you didn’t know).
- Lloyd Daniels – Lloyd’s doe eyes are keeping him in the competition, which is a constant reminder that the voting audience don’t much care for talent (or in Lloyd’s case, lack of). I always feel bad criticising this guy, but ultimately he’s drifted out of his depth in the competition and it would be better for him to leave.
Can you predict the bottom two?
For my money, Lloyd should be bottom two this week, and hopefully go home. Jedward could do with a reality check as well. Although if I’m honest, I can see Joe or Olly ending up in the bottom two, depending on the fickle public.
Over to you, tell us what you thought of tonight’s performances!

My prediction for the bottom two is Lloyd and Joe. Lloyd is stunningly bad and is not as entertaining as the twins. I think Joe gave a bland performance this week with a tired song.
You’re pathetic, you know that? More Danyl bashing. That’s just brilliant. Give the guy a friggin’ break, he was excellent tonight.
He had by far the best vocal, he looked the part, and although I wasn’t a fan of the weird table thing, his rendition of Purple Rain was (aside from his sing off) the top performance of the entire series.
I appreciate that you’re obscenely biased against the guy for whatever reason, but you should honestly appreciate a fantastic performance when you see one. You have a voice on the Internet and people read this blog, so that’s great, just don’t make a fool out of yourself in doing so.
And reading your other post, you’re a Ruth fan, which is even worse. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, but even watching Ruth’s back it is fairly obvious which was the better performance, it’s Danyl.
The guy is very talented and you really need to lay off him. You berated him with criticism last week, you bought into all these stories that have been said about him like a gullible moron, and you’re using this blog space to broadcast your unbelievable bias to the Internet, and it’s just verging on ridiculous.
I used to come here often, but I’m seriously not a fan of this constant Danyl bashing, and you should honestly cut down on it.
You can respond to this comment if you like, but don’t even think about deleting it.
I’m sorry, and what’s more, is the fact you’ve said that Joe and Stacey topped Danyl (and even Olly o0) when their performances were utterly devoid of any emotion whatsoever. It just really gets on my nerves, you know? Danyl sings his heart out week in week out and you’ve jumped on the Danyl-bashing bandwagon.
As I said, be a tad more professional with writing these blogs, the bias cannot be hidden forever I’m afraid…
Hi Carl! Nice to hear from you, and no – I won’t be deleting your comment. I invite comments because I like to hear what other people have to say about X Factor. Do you think I delete comments from people who don’t agree with me?
You must think I’m an egomaniac as well as a Danyl basher.
The fact is, I openly admit that Danyl is the best singer in the competition. Has been since day one, apart from his song last week.
And if you think it’s pure Danyl bashing, you’re wrong on that count too. I actually think that the singers are universally mediocre this year. I cannot see a legendary performer among them at all. Plus, the show itself seems to be dangerously edging into an identity crisis – is it a singing competition or is it an entertainment show? Why have a record deal as a prize?
Carl, you might want to look back at my earlier writings about Danyl. I was genuinely hopeful that he’d be the winner. However, I think he peaked too soon in the competition and hasn’t resoundingly impressed me since. Sorry, but that’s fact.
“…his rendition of Purple Rain was overwrought and horrible to listen to. It was almost an emotionless, 3rd rate boyband version of the song…”
I’m quoting you here. Is he overwrought or emotionless? In your eagerness to trash the guy, you’ve pretty much contradicted yourself. I don’t know what you have against the guy, but it’s obvious you aren’t able to communicate exactly why you don’t like him.
I personally wished he’d let go more than he did, but as I was listening to him, I knew I’d buy a CD of his any day. I can’t say the same for any of the other performers.
I think you can divide the performances in three groups this evening.
In the first group I would put Danyl, Lucie and Jamie based on the strength of the vocals, quality of performance and song choice.
In the second group, I would put Stacey, Olly and Joe, as their performances had at least two of: average vocals, an unoriginal performance or just plain bad song choice.
In the final group, I put Jedward and Lloyd as neither can sing (even worse than Cheryl Cole’s “live” performance). However, I stand by my prediction made earlier in this thread for the bottom two, as the public has taken a shine to those twins.
I completely agree with u. I just dont get Danyl – give ME a break Carl. Do we have to like him??? I’m starting to feel sick about beeing forced into liking this guy
I completely back you Carl! I agree with every word you said! Danyl deserves a break.
Daniel Johnson, fantastic singer/performer, will make it big. All the others nice but average and will be forgotten.
like the rest of the human race, I loved Danyl’s 1st audition. And that was it. Afterwards I realised he’s not that good, he did peak too soon. I can’t wait to see the back of him. And I don’t understand why people who read this blog can’t accept that people are entitled to disagree. I still think DJ will win this show – argh – but I don’t see him working as a recording artist longterm… I certainly won’t buy his record.
I love Joe – and the loving joe thing doesn’t equal hating danyl, I jst don’t like the guy – no matter the other contestants – period. I think Joe has the best (male) voice in this competition – yeah, it’s jst my humble opinion – and Dannii’s, of course.
I didn’t particularly like neither Lucie’s nor Stacey’s performances tonight. Actually I dindn’t particularly like any act tonight. In fact I thought tonights show was the most boring so far this season.
and please people vote Lloyd off, he just CANNOT sing (cute yeah, good singer, no). Cheryl should have chosen Ethan instead, at least he was hot as f*ck!
and I find it very annoying that simon still has his 3 acts left!!! am I the only one???
OMG did anyone else notice that Lucie has started to talk like stacy? How cringing was that last night, when she spoke after she sang? I thought why would you do that? you just sound so f**king stupid!
Stacy is unique in her own way, whether you like her or not (she’s a bit like marmite) But come on Lucie be an indivdual, start to let your personality come out (if youv’e got one)
My intention isn’t to knock her or even s**g her off. But I just had to say something. It was soooooooooooo cringy!!
I watched the Xtra Factor last night and without a doubt Danyl is being excluded – Holly focused on all the performers last night barring Danyl and when the clips of the ‘celebrities’ commenting on ‘who was going to win’ was shown, Danyl was the only act that wasn’t mentioned – it’s a disgrace – if this sort of behaviour was going on in the work place it wouldn’t be tolerated – it’s bullying pure and simple. Lloyd or Jedward should go tonight but neither of them will because it’s not a talent competition anymore it’s a farse – the whole show needs
shaking up with a change of judges and presenters or better still scrapped.
Oh yes Inchy, I also noticed that Lucie was talking like Stacey last night after her performance – it was VERY cringe worthy, absolutely pathetic!
@BarberinMi: Maybe ‘overwrought’ wasn’t exactly the right word, but what I meant was he did an awful lot of screaming and falsetto stuff that didn’t resonate with me. I felt he was going for a technically high standard but failing to deliver the emotional impact that Purple Rain needs in order to work.
And actually, I think I accused Jamie Archer of something similar in his performance – he started out subtly and by the end I wasn’t sure whether he was singing or yelling because he’d stubbed his toe.
Danyl was far superior to all of the other acts last night.
I’ve never been a huge fan of his but I can see that he is by far the most talented. He did a great job last night and should be given some credit.
On a more shallow note, he was looking really hot last night.
You obviously don’t know what your talking about in terms of a few of these acts, Danyl especially. He was sensational last night, an utterly different leauge to the others, as always. Not only should he win this competition, but he needs to win it and the concept of him not even getting to the finals makes a mockery of the entire show. People like you obviously wouldn’t no talent if it came up and slapped you in the face.

WOW!!!! its great to see how you all know so much yet you know nothing whos the daddy whos the millionairs? whos got to be sad enough to argue on here?
They are all amzing you try doing what they have done jeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Lets hope who ever goes tonite its because they cant SING………
not Bloody dance perform or act like spoilt brats you might find that the public have a choice use it…
Love u all Mwaaaaaaa
“Danyl deserves a break”
I agree, he is a nervous wreck and is clearly not suited to the limelight. A nice long rest would do him the world of good, then he might be able to get a job as a Redcoat next summer? I am sure his style would fit in well at Butlins. Apply now to avoid disappointment, Danyl.
Umm.. What is your PROBLEM?! every week your putting Jedward down! they’re NOT terrible singers . and when listening to them on the radio i realized this. stop critsizing them.
I LOVE YOU JOE MCCELDERY
Joe is hot! he can sing and he should win the XFactor
& Lucie sang Camp Rock – This is me . Everyone knows that song ! BUT, demi lovato sang it better. she wasn’t very good this week but she’s tipped to win alongside with Joe and Stacey
Carl said -”but even watching Ruth’s back it is fairly obvious which was the better performance, it’s Danyl.”
Oh please..you’re in a small minority of people if you honestly think Danyl performed “Purple Rain” better than Ruth Lorenzo..he was bland and dull in comparison.
Take a look at the Ruth / Danyl comments on twitter and polls doing the rounds on other websites..she’s getting around 85% of the vote vs 15% for Danyl (and frankly that’s too high for him..I can only assume he is that high because he’s a current performer as opposed to one from last year).
The vast majority of people think Ruth’s version blows his away by a large margin…and rightly so..he wasn’t even close.
Don’t get me wrong..he was still one of the best of the night..but it just goes to show how much weaker the talent is this year.
I agree with the point made earlier that is almost becoming fashionable to bash danyl. He put in a very good performance last night but like simon said he’s in a lose lose situation because some people are always trying to find fault. Based on his vocal ability and his performances, he should be in the final three.
I also totally disagree with the comments about olly not being able to sell records. This year’s bunch have been quite mediocre but olly is in a select of maybe two or three this year who i genuinely believe could sell records, the other two being either danyl or lucie. And out of those three, i believe he is the only with the personality to forge a career for himself.
The X Factor is an absolute conspiracy. What is happening with Jedward is exactly what happened with Sanjaya Malakar in American Idol. I encourage anybody with doubts to Wikipedia Sanjaya and read the entry. Note that Sanjaya finally received good comments the week before he left. Based on that, Jedward will be gone next week…unfortunately.
After weeks of slagging off the 2 twits john & edward Simon chickens out and takes a tactical decision to remove Luce because he knows that popularity vote had nothing to do with a superb vocal voice a threat to his boys. This was a disgraceful show of weakness this type of action must weaken the resolve of future contestants to even enter as real singing talent can lose out to mediocrity.Simon this was gutless
I thought lloyd was actually quite good on saturday he is sooo adorable (yes he’s not as good as joe but still i’d rather he was there than danyl, jamie, stacey and jedward).
I agree with peter, i think simon giving the twins good comments was him finally realising that alot of people were prob voting for them to annoy him.
