X Factor 2010: Gamu Nhengu ‘The girl with the flower in her hair!’ (VIDEO)

One to watch on this year’s X Factor is 18 year old Gamu Nhengu.

The young singer is originally from Zimbabwe but moved to Scotland just five years ago . On tonight’s show she sang an updated version of Katrina and the Waves ‘Walking On Sunshine,’ and the judges loved it.

Displaying an appealing mix of talent, personality and a back story Gamu said she wanted people to remember her saying ‘that girl with the flower in her hair can sing!’ We think she’s achieved her goal and more…..surely Gamu will make the lives shows?

Judges Comments:

Louis Walsh: I liked your energy and I think you’re very very soulful.

Simon Cowell: You sang one of my worst songs ever but you did something different with it. Gamu I really really liked you. You have this old school jazz voice and I think you are really talented.

Cheryl Cole: You have such a lovely little spirit. You stood in that spot and you made me excited. I really enjoyed your performance.

Geri Halliwell: Gamu I think your mum feels really proud of you right now. If you were my daughter I would.’

Four yeses and Gamu is through to bootcamp. Did you enjoy her performance tonight? Leave your comments below.

    • Paulsad says:

Stunning talent – she’s going to be a big star whether she wins or not although I doubt she will be beaten – she has the lot – looks, attitude, voice, likeability.
Much superior to the already overdone Mariah Carey soundalikes that seem to win every year – a breath of fresh air. Go Girl!!!

  2. kwame says:

wow, this girl was great,, she is definitely my best x-factor performer, ever,, wow, wow,,,i love her voice without doubt, and her being,, she is just great,, i think it will be easy for her to get to the finals

  3. glyn smith says:

I would buy this now,,,, not only have you found talent in this girl but I think you have found a number 1 hit with this song……very good and very now

  4. Marsha says:

Wow…now there is a STAR…Gamu’s performance was as we say “So Serious!!!” She’s only 18 with a huge voice and from Zimbabwe, love her even more. Goooo Gamu!! I hope she goes really far! In fact I think she may have the whole thing!

  5. Liz says:

Absolutely brilliant – brought tears to my eyes, now thats what the x factor is all about :D

  6. Kelly says:

    Fantastic love her

  7. Mark Simon says:

This girl has the biggest smile and the best talent, biggest voice and charisma to go with it.I want her to go all the way and you have six votes from my family already. We will buy your version of the song Gamu.

    • kwame says:

sorry, mark, but there was no auto tune to her voice, dont forget, auto tune, sort of, collate all voices, so that you dont necessarily know the difference. the girl was brilliant, dont spread false rumours about her,, be happy for her, congratulate her and stop hating. Gamu, u sang well, God bless, you, i know you will get to the finals, and even win it,,muah Gamu

  8. anon says:

Yeah but I wonder what she would sound like without the Autotune? Clearly the mics have been rigged with Autotune this year, which is really sad.

    • Seagull11 says:

      What is “Autotune”??

      • Joyce says:

This girl comes from my hometown and having heard her sing live in a local hall, no mikes, can assure you this is her real voice :)

    • Joe says:

Autotune is a computer program that tunes vocals on the fly.
The problem is you can hear it… It sounds very unnatural when used so blatantly.
They should he ashamed. This is supposed to be a singing competition.

  9. Challenged say says:

Well done Gamu, look up and not down. Please do not allow anyone to talk you down about who you are because you are a star and you are different. Now you can only go higher and the sky is the limit.

    Challenged

  10. Smooth6 says:

This kid is sensational. Such a soulful and powerful voice and her version of Walking on Sunshine is better than the original (even Cowell agrees). She had the whole auditorium rocking and rising to their feet in seconds. If this song was released tomorrow I’d go out and buy it. If I were a record producer I’d sign her immediately.

  11. David says:

I have heard her live and she was just as you heard her tonight.

  12. Hannah says:

I saw Gamu sing in the Royal concert hall in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago. She was fantastic, not a professional production so she wasn’t paid it was just a concert. She has a fabulous voice – it’s not autotune just to let you know. She’s actually incredible. Sends shivers down your spine! I hope she wins. And I hate xfactor usually but this girl has got star quality.

    • Rhys says:

No-one is claiming she can’t sing, we’re just saying that there is very obviously live AutoTune in use, not just in this audition but many others.

      • kwame says:

there is no imperfection there in this girl’s voice, the lady was just superb, no auto tune detected,, and even if everybody had auto tune, then there is no reason u raising the issue, because they all had a fair platform,, please stop hating on her,,the girl’s performance out-shines any one who has ever contested in x-factor,, definitely voting this time round,, Gamu will get to the finals,, goooo Gamu

    • Joe says:

      Sorry Hannah,
They did use AutoTune on her vocal tonight.
I don’t know why, because she can sing.
There is nothing wrong with a bit of imperfection…

  13. bb says:

brilliant perfomance.. yo go gal, done us proud..

  14. Ann says:

    Outstanding performance…

  15. Ryan says:

I think it’s post production, and they’ve added auto-tune to her voice. It would be way to risky to have live chromatic auto-tune on stage as it would be even more obvious with one off note or scale. I dunno why they are doing this, as the show is meant to be about live singing talent… somebody should really complain to ITV…

it’s noticeable on that S+G group too, whats up ITV? they dont even need it!

  16. Mary says:

Stunning…I’m speechless…I personally could give her a record deal anytime…if only I could!!!

  17. Mary says:

I meant “I would, if only I could” go Gamu go Gamu goo babe

  18. Ad says:

AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !! AUTO TUNE !!

    • kwame says:

sorry hater, but there was no auto tune in her singing,, the mic was as clear as ever,, the same mike that they used last year and the year before, why complain about her now, if you dont have your own personal or emotional hate toward this pretty girl.. we all listened, and the thing was live, mpre so, the audience in the room felt the greatness in her voice and charged with praise and adoration, so what is your problem,, GO GAMU, I WILL VOTE ALL I HAVE ON YOU,, WELDONE

      • Joe says:

Unfortunatly Autotune was used on a few of the performers on last nights show.
This is nothing to do with hate, it wasn’t Gamu’s fault. It is down to a decision made by the producers of XFactor. Please don’t get angry with people discussing this fact here.
We all agree that she has a great voice. We just want this “competition” to be fair.
We, as a nation will be spending millions of pounds in phone voting later in the year.
It would be a travesty if we were being conned into voting for a weaker singer because of technological manipulation. We need to ask the producer why they feel it nesicary to do this.

      • kwame says:

how is it going to affect your voting when they are all on the same platform. the same mic, and if there is autotune, then the effects is on all performers, so how would that favour one. auto tune does not sing for you. there were some really bad singers and auto tune did not make their voices better,, so just come of it, and just appreciate the greatness in the young girl GAMU,,,GAMU WILL WIN IT FOR SURE,OR BE IN THE FINALS IF THERE IS ANY FAIRNESS

  19. Turlough says:

Never thought much of X-factor and I just happened to switch over to the beginning of this amazing performance. The hairs stood up on the back of my neck and goose pimples sprouted all over my arms!

Really, really outstanding voice and this girl has got it all. She must release this song as a single! All the judges were left stunned during the song! She should be declared winner now so we can all go out and buy her records.
i will watch her progress through the contest and barring a disaster I am sure she will win the whole thing outright. Amazing, just amazing.

  20. Jon says:

Wow!!! What can you say about that performance, i have watched it a few times now and it gets better every time. Seriously this girl is good and that version she has sung is fantastic, like others on here i would buy it tommorrow. Proper voice and an instant hit with me, i have only felt like this for a singer in a show like this once and that was with Will Young and look what he has done. This girl will win it and be a huge star. “I remember the girl with the flower in her hair and she was great”

  21. Doh Ray Meeee says:

Under the autotune it sounded like she could sing ok.

So why are they using autotune during auditions.

    Bit silly really.

For those who doubt it is autotune, or don’t know what it is this story is on the daily mail website.

    • kwame says:

BRUV, HATER!!, there was no auto tune used in her voice, and guess what,, even if they used MANUAL-TUNE, i would still love her and vote for her,, whats your problem,, cant a young black girl have a break, and be on the path to fulfill a one time dream too?,, GO GAMU, YOUR VOICE WAS NATURAL, AND JUST PERFECT,, THIS IS EASY FOR YOU, U WILL WIN WITHOUT DOUBT.

    • king of Punk says:

      Autotune was used

  22. Nhamo says:

I bet they were all using autotune but she came out super!! Keep it up gal! You have what it takes to make it.

    • Pfungwa says:

Autotune or no autotune let us be honest, The girl is a superstar. I liked her composure and confidence. Go Gamu! Go Gamu!. You definetly derseve to be counted amongst the best.lets learn to appreciate something good.

  23. I am Legend says:

Great perfomance and a credit to her family

  24. Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!! Go Zimbo chick!!! You are amazing!!! So proud!!! xx

  25. Pfungwa says:

A star has been born. Shine on Gamu, we are all proud of you. You are a jewell.

  26. Joe says:

Great voice and can take her far!! Many who cant even talk in tune think singing is easy. She is up there with divas like Aretha Franklin. Brilliant tearful, goose bumping performance!!! Nice one Gamu

  27. Jose says:

Gamu presented us with a distinguished performance. I hope she goes all the way to win this year’s X-factor. I have listened to Gamu on YouTube over and over again and in my opinion she can be Great Britain’s Aretha Franklin.

  28. Mark says:

For all the people that say there was no AutoTune, please listen again and again and if you think that robot sound on the voice is natural then you are delluded. This is from a Recording Engineer I know when I hear auto tune. No doubt she can sing she didnt actually need it, live performances are never perfect and the production team should listen and be ashamed that they didn’t cover it up well enough! Oh and of course using it in the first place.

    • kwame says:

i just cant stop listening to her on youtube, for the first time, i am actually paying attention on a singer of x-factor,, if they all used auto-tune, then what is the outcry for,,,there is always somebody out there who would want to spoil the fun for everybody,,auto-tune, or manual-tune Gamu was the best out there, and she is even better than Alexander by far,,i just hope she wins,,welll let me go watch heron you tube just this once again,,,see ya

    • Daexion says:

Autotune isn’t an issue on a final release of a CD if it fits the music. Autotune is an issue when used in a singing competition in that it covers up the singers actual singing voice. When I listened to her on YouTube, it sounded like same octave yodeling at times with a mechanical overtone. I can tell the difference between a natural singing voice and one that’s been autotuned. It isn’t just me that is saying many auditions have been autotuned, many many many people are saying this, and most are in agreement that autotune does not belong in a singing competition.

The difference between autotune and “manual tune” is “manual tune” is the singers ability to sing in pitch, and autotune is a computer automatically adjusting the singers pitch.

No one is saying she cannot sing, they are just complaining about the use of Autotune by the producers without her knowledge.

      • kwame says:

auto tune actually worsens your voice if u are bad at singing,, if you listen to kanye west trying to sing you will understand. gamu is much much better than auto-tune. well Gamu is my sunshine, and a staying right here, not going anywhere,, guess what am doing next? yep,,am logging into youtube to watch her just once again,,,,,go GAMU

  29. paxton says:

    Hey people…..

I am a friend of Gamu and know her from Scotland, she said there was no autotune used. it would be nice if people stopped insisting that auto tune was used as it is noot true. Gamu has a sweet angel like voice that is natural and god given.

    • Joe says:

      Hey Paxton,

There aren’t many singers out there who are aware of precisely what processing is being used on there performances, especially in the live environment. There are numerous effects that are used including EQ, compression and sadly Autotune that can be used to enhance a vocal performance. All of which can be applied either live or during post production.
I have just watched her performance again on ITV2 and great that it was, there was quite blatant use of Autotune. They also used it on the girl in G&S (playing as I type) not the man…

So, the problem isn’t Gamu’s obvious talent, it’s that the producers think it ok to improve certain performances in a supposed vocal competition.
We will all be expected to vote later in series, how is a layman going to be able subjectively choose who to vote for when the performances are clearly being “fixed” in post?

  30. Challenged say says:

Gamu, you have got it and you are going somewhere.Whether it is through X factor or not you are born to sing.

  31. Martie says:

Cant understand the bickering going on. Gamu is good – no doubt! If autotune was used it was used on all contestants past and present and never have we heard a singing voice so outstanding! The whole perfomance was out of this world those actions what ever they are could were wicked! Even Cheryl said she liked them – suited the songs like pieces of jigsaw puzzle! Ramba wakadaro mwana wekumusha!!

  32. Jill Lambert says:

Makorokoto Gamu! We’re proud of you – famba girl!

  33. ashley garaiza says:

she is a great singer I have never heard on Britian got talent,,,,OH MY GOd people from my country are very good at singing,,i realy like her,,,keep on Gamu

  34. clemence wande says:

uuhmmmmm. ndiko kunonzi kugona uku gamu. listen not to those who think otherwise, majairosi chete.

  35. Mark says:

Most amazing 18 year old ever, I would buy that version tomorrow, ive also replayed it loads, and the shivers and the tears. Nothing else has ever done that to me before.

Moneys on her to win !

    Good Luck

  36. MATT says:

GAMU WAS SIMPLY THE MOST TALENTED (AND LIKEABLE) PERSON I’VE SEEN RECENTLY ON TV.

WELL DONE GIRL!! BIG STAR IN THE THE MAKING THERE.

  37. Dan says:

The Autotune was applied POST production not live in the Arena, the judges and the audience heard her natural voice. For some unexplained reason the producers thought us at home should hear the horrible and robotic autotuned version.

    Outrageous.

  38. Several Pies says:

Im speechless, her voice is so powerful and original, shes an amazing singer and frankly, autotune was a useless addition to her voice if it was used, You cant make her any better than she already is, Go Gamu !

  39. Susan says:

Is there a way that we can hear the audition without the autotone, or are there any other you tube clips of gamu? The judges said she had an amazing jazz voice but she sounded like really great but a bit like cher to me… I want to hear the jazz original version without post-production!!

  40. Shane says:

    Gamu,
Absulately your amazing! very best of luck little girl. you have such a tallent of singing.

  41. panashe says:

WOOO GOO ZIMBABWE POWER, YOU GO GIRL!! AND SO WHAT IF SHE HAD AUTOTUNE OR NOT? SHE WAS THE BEST AUDITIONER BY FAR :D

  42. Rungano says:

GAMU “IF GOD BE FOR YOU WHO CAN BE AGAINST YOU “KEEP YOUR HEAD UP HIGH, YOU ARE GOING PLACES NOT EVEN THE SKY IS THE LIMIT. REPRESENTING US ALL.

  43. Amber says:

Gamu’s performance was simply amazing…totally breathtaking. But one question. What was the song that came on air after her perfomance. like during the tears and all and when she was walking off the stage. pls sum1 tel me Thanks!

  44. julie says:

i’d defo buy gamu’s version of walkin on sunshine…it seemed such an effortless performance- brilliant . The song after was oasis singing stop crying your heart out : )

    • Amber says:

thank u so so so much. I actually like the song THANKSA MILLION… :D

    • MrXile says:

No, it was not them singing it. It’s most definately a woman near the end, and a guy singing it softly whilst Gamu found out her fate.

Its in the wrong key for it to be Oasis, and Liam Gallaghers voice is so distinctive, that it is clearly not him.

I have not however been able to ascertain who actually sings this version on X-Factor, and its doing my head in! Its a really good version, and I want it on my iPodious.

  45. MICK says:

Of all the AUDITIONERS she has been the best girl right now pliz why was these auto-tune issues raised long back just because its a simple Zimbabwean lady this all starts guys. This is not fair give the girl a chance.Gamu you are the best girl l will support you…HATERS please lets find another reason to denounce such talent not the auto-tune issue…..The competition is free to everyone……..

  46. George says:

I think and I’m sure a lot of people will agree with me : that Autotune is fine as long as ALL contestants have use of this.
Gamu would probably have done well without this but that is not the point I am trying to make.
If Autotune is only used on a random number of contestants then it isn’t fair and the so called ‘Everyone is in with an honest and fair chance’ becomes a cover-up to what may appear as favouritism or being fixed.
I’m not doubting that this girl can sing but in the early stages of a competition Autotune should not be allowed in order to fully bring through the NATURAL singers/performers.
The only time Autotune should be made available is when the winner is picked and if Autotune could enhance the winners performance then so be it but not until.

  47. DONNIE says:

immeasurable talent, awesome ,I have played her songs over and over again .

  48. Ashley Jones says:

:( cannot belive Gamu didnt get through to the live shows
i like cher and the other girls but Gamu had the best voice

  49. knox mbidzo says:

winning or not winning, you still gonna rise girl. jus keep on fighting the sky is your limit. God bless u my dear
