X Factor 2011: Gary Barlow ‘loses interest’ in Janet Devlin – ‘Somebody To Love’ (VIDEO)
Janet Devlin had a bit of a wobble during the week and insiders say she even threatened to leave the competition a few days ago, but tonight she returned to the X Factor stage for Lady Gaga vs Queen week.
This evening the Northern Irish teenager took on Queen’s ‘Somebody To Love’, a song which reached number two in the UK singles chart before shw was even born in 1976.
Janet appeared on stage tonight, wearing a long sheer skirt and standing, on a high platform with just a few violinists and a piano player for company. It was very stripped back and if we hadn’t already known what she was singing, we might not have recognised the track at first.
However, by a few lines in, we became more comfortable with the version and loved the fact that Janet changed it up so massively.
We thought it was a return to form for the young singer, but have a feeling that it may be one of those performances people will either love, or really hate!
JUDGES COMMENTS
LOUIS WALSH: Janet another captivating performance. I think you’re the most consistent performer and I think you’re the person that everyone is going to have to beat. I can see you in the final now.
TULISA CONTOSTAVLOS: Janet there is no doutb about it, I can see there is a market for you, there’s a fanbase, there are people that will buy your albums. My only issue is that your style is a bit one dimensional and for me, I’d have to be in a certain mood to listen to your album.
GARY BARLOW: Janet I hate to see this but I’m starting to lose interest in you I really am. To me that performance didn’t work tonight, it was bordering on boring. I think you need to take these opportunities every week and think of them as if you are presenting your first single. I just don’t feel like you’re making enough of an effort.
KELLY ROWLAND: Janet has worked really hard and she definitely went back to her roots I really respect her for that.

Gary Barlow is a complete tool he’s totally tactical judging because he wants one of his boring boys to win,that was a great performance by Janet the guys an idiot really can’t stand him

Janet was brilliant. Pulled at MY heartstrings. Maybe Barlow hasn’t any!!. What a cruel man.
Sorry guys, she may be cute and have a nice voice but I found her performance very boring. I totally agree with Gary Barlow.

She has a beautiful voice, but this was much too slow, l have to agree with Gary on this one. Even if she was slow, in the beginning, she needed to pick up the tempo midway through.
It is not all about boring or not. Adele or drew ryniewicz fr xfusa can sing slow and still move people. Janet, unfortunately, has very flat vocal. There is hardly any key changes in her performances. Her vocal range again is limited too. Her breathing technique is so bad that when I listen to her on ipod, I hear loud inhaling noise every 10sec. She has bad habit of yodeling too. Musically trained professionals like gary or even kelly herself know that janet can’t sing but she is cute.
absolutly completely disagree.. what you have said there is complete bullsh1t what are you on about yodelling for.. she has a very distinct twang in her voice that gives me shivers everytime i hear it
gary was really harsh with his comments on janet’s performace tonight. was a bit slow but never ever boring. tactics are really playing a big part now with the mentors. thought that gary would be above all that crap!
Gary Barlow should be ashamed the way he treated Janet tonight. She is only a kid with very little experience and at her audition she blew him away. Its the production team who control her performance and song etc., and she has to follow. Janet will make it on her own merit and doesn’t need the XFACTOR.
Margaret I so agree. Mr Barlow was cruel to a very young talent. Shame on him. He obviously doesn’t emphasize with the young and hasn’t the insight to see what Janet is striving for. Something genuine from the heart to the heart. Janet is too good for X Factor.

That girl can sing, and I’m sure as hell she can set up great performances. But what’s that with those songs… Please, give that girl a song to sing, instead of breaking someting down to nothing and hoping that the singer still can save it. What will it be next week, a slowed down U2-number-one-hit shattered into nothing?
Based on this week, I’m sorry but Janet > Marcus. I can see Janet doing a soundtrack for drama movie, it would be good haha.
Why is it only Janet that gets so little in back up – dancers etc., etc., and is made to stand alone on the stage. The other acts all have SPECTACULAR settings. The producers are relying on her voice alone and then she gets SLATED for her performance. I hope she does walk away this is a a rat race she can do without. She will make it big but right now JANET ENJOY YOUR TEENS – leave this behind.
Janet just leave x Factor, you have a good voice I believe you can be a famous singer one day even without xFactor.

Erm…..the whole show has become predictable and janet does the same thing week after week.
I dont like the way she sings,i like to hear the words.

Janet sings with feeling. She reaches my heart every time. I feel Freddy would have liked this. Some people, including Barlow, have, no insight into what Janet is striving for. This song is about loneliness and that is what Janet, very powerfully, projected. She is a class act. A beautiful young girl who offers something different,something genuine. This should be encouraged. Mr Barlow’s comments were cruel and insensitive. It is possible to give criticism without being unkind. Many happy returns Janet.
You lot are talking bullshit Craig does bloody ballads each week Marcus is a good singer like Bruno mars baths being too competitive. Look at leona very talented she did the same thing each week artists have their own style. Shes bloody fantastic only sixteen garys just picking on her making her upset as he knows that it will hurt her and affect her confidence
