X Factor 2011 Rock Week – We Rate The Contestants

If you watched The X Factor‘s attempt at “Rock Week“, you may be wondering what their definition of “rock” actually is. Judging by our Facebook and Twitter pages, most of the nation was baffled by the anaemic song choices and Tulisa Contostavlos’ decision to throw in a bit of vintage Salt N’ Pepa.

Now, despite being publicly berated by Tulisa for being a backstage bully, we crowned Misha Bryan our favourite performance of the night. Bucking a night-long trend of dull song choices and uninspiring performances, Misha came out and blew us away with a version of Purple Rain that was pitch perfect. Here’s this week’s Unreality TV chart for X Factor along with what we thought of the acts.

  1. Misha BryanPurple Rain: The first time since Ruth Lorenzo debuted Purple Rain on X Factor that anyone’s come close to the Spaniard’s version. Misha gave a powerful performance worthy of a front-runner in this competition. In fact, she left most of the other contestants for dust tonight.
  2. Marcus CollinsAre You Gonna Go My Way: Weirded out that Marcus has charted so high? His vocals were much better than the average contestant tonight, and he worked well within the staging he was given. He still seems like a charisma vacuum, but he might be on track to change our opinions!
  3. Kitty BrucknellLive And Let Die: Don’t get us wrong, Kitty’s vocals were woeful tonight. She was screechy and off-key and generally offended our eardrums in every way possible. To her credit though, she came on after a series of dismal performances and was at least interesting to watch. Even if our gran did turn her hearing aid off in the corner.
  4. Janet DevlinSweet Child O’Mine: Vocally, it was an acceptable performance. But if you could ignore the Fiz from Corrie hair-styling (nice work, X Factor stylists), Janet’s delivery was utterly dreary. And we’re from Northern Ireland and rooting for her, but she’s giving each song the same treatment each week and it’s getting boring. Need to see another side to Janet!
  5. Sophie HabibisLivin’ On A Prayer: Another rock song slowed down to funeral march tempo. This could’ve been Sophie’s chance to shine and show off a powerful vocal, but when she hit the climax of the song, the dog let out a yelp and hid behind the sofa.
  6. Johnny RobinsonI Believe In A Thing Called Love: The delicious irony of such a joke act being rated so higly. We love Johnny. We love his witty retorts to Gary Barlow. We love how wonderfully camp he is.
  7. Craig ColtonStop Crying Your Heart Out: We remember Craig back when he seemed like a fun guy everyone was rooting for back in boot camp. He’s inexplicably morphed into a dreadfully styled, painfully tedious singer. His personality seems to have evaporated.
  8. RhythmixTik Tok: Bleh. Just bleh. Vocals were awful. Disappointed.
  9. Frankie CoccozzaGet Your Rocks Off: Frankie only makes #9 because The Risk were so damned bad. We loathed everything about his presence on the show tonight, from the hard-partying orgy-loving sleaze of his VT to his self-indulgent stage performance. Horrible little git. Oh, and well done to ITV for putting that video on a Saturday night family show. Not desperate for controversy at all, are you?
  10. The Risk: So utterly forgettable was this performance that we’ve already forgotten what they sang. “The Risk” by definition sounds like an edgy proposition, a group whose name evokes danger. There’s simply nothing risky about The Risk and it’s a shame supposedly feisty Tulisa can’t tease something more interesting out of them.
  11. Sami BrookesTurn Back Time: We’re over Sami Brookes already. She’s got a great singing voice, to be sure, and she seems lovely. But we’ve seen contestants better than her on X Factor before and they ultimately never go very far. A bit like Johnny Robinson and Craig Colton, we can’t see Sami ever selling an iTunes cartload of records. To give Gary Barlow proper credit, he was right when he called her performance boring.

We’ve got to say, it was a tough chart tonight. We were initially tempted to just rank everybody after the first three as equally bad. If the vocals weren’t rubbish, the performances were as exciting as last night’s dishwater.

But we’d love to hear from you lot – who were your favourite performances on X Factor’s not-rock week? And who were your least favourite?

Sorry would have had Janet in 2nd if not first,Misha has done herself no favours with her backstage behaviour, all this Janet just stands there and sings excuse is a cop out alot of singers just stand there, she let’s her voice do the talking I’m still backing her to win because she is different

  2. Nuperez says:

    Janet isnt different… GOD!

Misha to win all the way.

    • Gav says:

er yeah she is different, and theres no way in hell misha will win now her backstage bullyig has come back to bite her in the ass,she may have a good voice but she thinks shes all that

    • Seymour says:

Janet is undeniably unique, she may have been a lil bit of a one trick pony. But if she gets the right song, she will sell tons of records. Trust me.

  3. Mafs says:

Tonight the best performance was the one from Misha. However, my favourites to win are Janet and Sophie. Misha is incredibly talented but when she asked Louis “Pardon?” I didn’t feel any good vibe from her, I don’t know how to explain it… I never saw that side of Misha and I always saw her as very humble and as someone who wants this really bad but tonight that kinda changed. The judges didn’t need to say nothing, her whole pose was… arghhh I just didn’t like it :/

It’s sad because she’s super talented. Definitely this season the winner will be from Girls category!!!

  4. Potter says:

I love love misha! she diserves win this shit contest! She’s amazing

  5. Cyprian says:

Watching Frankie try to sing in key is like watching a Tyrannosaurus Rex try to pleasure himself, its just not gonna happen mate.

  6. Mr.Bill says:

Fantastic version of “Sweet child of mine” I love listening to you sing Janet, you leave me wanting more! Kelly, you are a wee-bit over stylizing Janet, Please give her back the natural Irish lass she came to you as. Let her sing the Ballads, love songs and heart felt music. The world is not always glitter and gold it is “True Colors” shining through like an Irish Rainbow.

  7. Master D says:

One advice: don’t base your judgement on wht others say!
One commment: Jealouse people will kill themselves
One prayer: May God Do her justice. Misha B keep on going!

  8. charlotte says:

Misha’s got the X Factor, and I see a bright future for her in the entertainment industry.

  9. missindividuality says:

Sophie, Misha or Janet to win, they were all stars last night, (and johnny was brilliant!).

Tulisa criticised Janet about not being rocky, but her acts were the least rockiest of them all! And she was so immature to bring that horrible stuff up about Misha that could have been untrue. So unprofessional and incredibly stupid.

  10. Chris says:

Janet had the best performance. She is better at interpreting a song than anyone else in the competition and it showed again. And Tulisa is wrong – that was a rock song, but you won’t see Janet head bang any more than you will see Adele do it. Good for her, changing it up to suit her style.

Misha has a great voice but she plows through songs like a freight train. No subtlety at all, and it’s starting to get old.

It’s time for Frankie to go home.

  11. Seymour says:

I love Misha, she’s the best of the night. But then again, backstage bullying or diva attitude is unforgivable.

“Humble yourselves, and people shall lift you up”

  12. erin louise clare cox says:

who will be eliminated tonight and who will be in the bottom two plus is there a website that will show who is most likely to be in the bottom two and who is more likely to be elimunated.

  13. DMDBOTH says:

Irrespective of what is going on behind the scenes we are supposed to be looking at a talent competition and the ONLY person that shows she has the X Factor is Misha. She was born to perform. There is absloutely no competition and this year’s line up is very boring. Frankie is absolutely talentless and should never have even got to boot camp and, sweet as she is, Sophie should never have been chose over Amelia.

  14. cjcsPT says:

These live shows make my point by itselves: we needed Jade Richards on the show, because all acts are so dreadful this season! Frankie is by a comfortable mile the worst of them all (I really don’t get why he was kept last week) and Janet is soooooo boring!

  15. megz says:

i’d rank it pretty much the same except with frankie at number 11. while i do think misha is the best of the lot, i just dont like her abrasivness. Marcus is my favourite of all the contestants =D

  16. Maggy says:

Who voted for Frankie to stay in the competiton? Why isn’t him in the bottom 2 but Sammi and Kitty (who are very strong singers) are? So unfair, now I know that Sammi will be going home -.-’

  17. Cyprian says:

Can somebody please tell me why Janet didn’t sing ‘Zombie’ by the Cranberries this week. She would’ve been perfect!!

    • erin louise clare cox says:

yes because really miss kelly rowland is a rubbish mentor and can’t say that amelia is better than sophie and jade isn’t through yes janet is boring and she got picked over jade so why can’t it be the other way around?
