X Factor 2012: Gary Barlow gushes over Asda worker Jahmene Douglas’ ‘At Last’ audition!

Jahmene Douglas is one of two major stand out acts that will be featured on tonight’s X factor launch show.

The ITV series returns to our screens this evening and the young Asda worker at first seems like one of those joke acts, who everyone is going to feel really bad about laughing at later on.

He was so nervous before taking to the stage that we were sure he’d have no talent and his own comments didn’t do much to inspire confidence.

The Swindon lad said:

‘People that know me, know I’m a worrier.’

He added:

‘I’m a stay at home kind of guy, I’m so nervous I might pee myself!’

However, the insecurities all seemed to slip away as Jahmene started to belt out Etta James ‘At Last’. Katie Waissel may have done the song justice in 2010 but this was in another league!

His high voice had a distinct gospel overtone and literally gave us goosebumps down our arms. Nicole Scherzinger felt the same and even made Gary Barlow touch hers for proof.

After the audition Louis Walsh raved:

Jahmene Douglas you are a revelation! You definitely have the X Factor….a star is born!’

Tulisa added:

‘You have it…not just the X Factor but the shock factor too. It was blinking amazing.’

Nicole gushed:

‘We need more singers like you. Real singers. I want to eat you right up honey!

Gary Barlow is usually the most measured judge of the panel but he knows talent when he sees it. The Take That star continued:

‘I have never seen a vocal performance like that before. You nailed it. That is how to do an audition.’

Tune into the X factor tonight to see Jahmene Douglas’s full audition and to find out whether or not he makes bootcamp.

In the meantime, listen to him sing and tell us, do you think he’s good enough for bootcamp? Leave your comments below…

I agree, but I don’t think it’s down to the contestants. I’m sure the producers push for each auditions show to have as many well-known songs as possible to help the viewing figures. If that is correct the policy is a screaming failure: the show’s statistics are still slipping lower and lower. Should anything go wrong for Jahmene the viewing figures for the live shows would be abysmal, so I reckon he will be wrapped up in cotton wool and supported a max. The show now needs Jahmene more than Jahmene now needs the show, and by a very, very long way.

I thought Jahmene unbelievable talented and appears to be such a nice, nice guy. He deserves to go all the way but just hope that he will handle the success as he says he can. Success can be a double edged sword. Thank goodness he has the back up of his mother and he seems to respect her so.

What a voice…I keep replaying it I would buy his cd any day
    Bloody great loved him

As a performer myself, and a student of black music history, I can honestly say that Jahmene has a voice to rival the true greats of R’n'B—Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Clyde McPhatter, LaVern Baker, Bobby Bland, etc. I am not in the habit of lavishing praise, but I never thought I’d hear a British singer with such an instinctive, soulful, gospel-inspired voice. I only hope they do not try to turn him into something he is not and overproduce him. He is something very, very special.

Buster that is one heck of a good comment. I go a little further in hoping Jahmene gets to the final but doesn’t win. Like that he gets maximum exposure but isn’t locked in to the standard Cowell recording contract. Rebecca has done well out of that, Misha B is doing well out of it… (Sure, the girls have contracts with Sony one way or another, but they got to negotiate on the clauses they did not like. Don’t forget that Rebecca is a qualified legal secretary…)

He stopped me in my tracks!he’s the best singer iv’e heard in the UK for ages, soul and emotion right there on Xfactor, wether he wins or not, he’s going far, that’s for sure,he has a very special voice, and i can’t wait to hear him sing again.

I’m in America and heard him on Youtube, honestly not since Susan Boyle have I listened so many times to a single audition. I hope he makes an Album soon, I’ll be first in line to purchase it. God Bless him on his views of life, this is why his voice is so pure. Love him even more.
