X Factor 2012: Pink impersonator Zoe Alexander kicks off in the biggest way! (VIDEO)

Zoe Alexander will not be feeling so good about herself or her X Factor portrayal after watching herself on tonight’s episode we’d bet.

The 22 year old singer from South Wales turned up to try out for the ITV show, dressed as Pink and singing a pink song. However, she said she wanted people to see her own talent and wanted to make a splash in her own right so the whole message was very confusing.

She comes from a family of lookalikes, with her father impersonating Tom Jones for a living and her mum taking on the image of Shania Twain. But it seems the judges had experienced enough lookalikes during their audition tour.

Before singing the Welsh hopeful told the panel:

“I’m hoping to get a bit of an identity, my own identity.’

She then launched into a decent rendition of ‘So What’ by Pink. Tulisa seemed a little unsure and told Zoe:

“I actually quite liked your image when you came out, and then when you told me about Pink, I realised okay you based it on Pink.”

Zoe retorted:

“No I didn’t base it in Pink. I’m trying to get away from the Pink thing.”

Our first thought was she could have tried a lot harder!

The judges then allowed her to sing a second song, after which she crooned to Emeli Sande’s ‘Next To Me.’

Nicole tried to be constructive with her comments and told Alexander that she liked her ‘energy,’ enjoyed her ‘pretty good’ singing but continued:

“I honestly think that you need to go away and find yourself as an artist, who you are.”

Gary Barlow said:

“Zoe, I am definitely confused with the identity issue, you came out saying you wanted an identity and then you sing Pink, I thought that the second song was much better, but I do think you need to go away and really find your own lane and find what sounds right for your voice, because at the moment it just sounds like every other average sort of singing voice.”

Louis Walsh said::

” Zoe, it’s a pity because you’ve got a great look, you absolutely look like a pop-star, but the vocal was just very very average. But I think with time you could be fantastic but I think you need to go and find yourself and come back as Zoe.

Zoe wasn’t happy with the critique and told the panel that she had been told to sing a Pink song and directed to dress like the popstar. Tulisa denied her claims but the contestant ranted:

“I didn’t want to sing a Pink song, I wanted to be me, you guys told me to sing a Pink song.”

Things started to get very heated at this point and Zoe was almost in tears. The judges tried to defend their position, saying that they had allowed her a second song and still hadn’t been impressed with her singing. Louis was particularly harsh, hitting out:

“Zoe, it was your audition, and you messed up. I’m sorry.”

It was the last straw and at this point the Pink lookalike threw her mic, walked off the stage, pushed a camera man and began yelling obscenities at anyone in the vicinity. Poor Dermot looked so shocked, we thought his ears were going to bleed.

However, she came back, this time with her rather tough looking dad on her arm and as Nicole pleaded ‘No Baby No! No Baby No!’, the pair continued to shout and looked like they were going to move down to the judges’ table.

Finally, they left, pushing more staff and screaming at the crowds as they went. It was a shocking episode altogether!

Tulisa later admitted that she had been worried about Louis’ safety if things had gotten really out of hand and after the incident it was revealed that a producer had called police, who cautioned the 22 year old.

We understand that Zoe may have had issues about how the production team handled her audition and felt shortchanged and hard done by, but we think that even her nearest and dearest would agree that this was perhaps not the best way to deal with the problem.

What did you think of her performance? Do you think the judges caused her temper tantrum? Leave your comments below….

  1. Nathanael says:

This is a disgusting article about a disgusting incident. It’s well known that X-factor ‘auditionees’ are pre auditioned in order to screen for good quality and funny personalities to put in front of the judges.

Clearly some sick producer thought it would be funny to tell this girl to sing pink first, she didn’t get any choice and was set up. Anyone with half a brain knows that, and to treat people like that, potentially causing a LOT of damage emotionally and to there career, just for a pissing TV show is unacceptable.

This was the most disgusting bit of TV I have witnessed in years, and a terrible example of sheep mentality where a whole audience boos instead of using there brains and realising the poor girl was set up.

I literally couldn’t be more disgusted.

    • jan says:

I couldn’t agree more. She has been clearly set up. The XFactor producers have seriously got it wrong if they think this is entertainment.

    • Dee says:

It is completely irrelevant whether she was set up or not. (and I have no doubt the production team told her to sing a Pink song) She was given an opportunity to sing another song and the performance was , at best, poor. What is relevant is how a person responds to being told “You just don’t make the grade”. She is responsible for how she chose to deal with that rejection. It has nothing to do with the producers and everything to do with her. It was absolutely pathetic and nothing can condone her disgusting behaviour.

    • Sheila says:

the young lady was set up which threw her of guard for the ’2nd song’. nerves on the day (remember the show is live in front of a studio audience), cameras, etc., the Pink (set up) scenario blindedsided the contestant, knocked her confidence I would think.
if it seems she lost a cool, can you blame her? she also shot herself in the foot by mentioning the ‘wanting to get away’ from Pink, unless production set her up there too

  2. Mandy says:

I can see that the producers possibly set her up, however that is not the judges fault and they did give her a chance to sing another song. I think her reaction and violence was totally unnecessary especially to the cameramen and back stage staff. She will not have won any sympathy with the public for reacting the way she did. I also agree with the judges she wasn’t very good on either song

  3. Christa says:

I agree with Nathanael. She’d clearly been set up and what we saw was it dawning on her. I felt sorry for her. Yes, she overreacted, but I imagine she was encouraged to sing the song, and told she would have a good chance of getting through if she did. Poor girl.

  4. Leppy says:

Zoe was very average she even sounded breathless. Average is not the xfactor. Her out burst was not aided by her father he should never have returned her to the stage how ever did he think this was gonna help the poor spoilt fowl mouthed angry child. She will be lucky if an example is not made of her.

  5. Jessica says:

Even if the producers encouraged her to sing a Pink song it didn’t guarantee that she would get through they even let her sing a second song which not a lot of people get to do. This is the risk you take with a show like this.

The judges were actually very polite to her compared to other contestants that have been on in previous years.

Regardless of the situation she completely over reacted and made her self look ridiculous kicking and stamping her way around like a 5 year old, and her dad was worse for encouraging it.

She clearly isn’t ready for the pressure of fame if she can’t handle constructive criticism.

    • K says:

I totally agree. Even if she was set up, she still fluffed it on her second song. That doesn’t mean she can go round hitting cameramen. Besides, she would have got a harsher reception if Simon had been on the panel.

    • marc says:

I completely agree. To be a success in any profession, including being a singer you have to be able to take feedback whether it dents your ego or not. My guess is she’s always been given positive feedback by those who love her (her dad) even when she isn’t very good. It then comes as a shock that her illusion of being a star is not shared by others. Also, aggression is not the way to get your own way but my guess is this is how she operates in her own life. Become aggressive and others comply with her!!!

It’s a sad state of affairs that people’s insecurities and emotions are viewed as entertainment, although I must concede I was amused!!

  6. Peter says:

Whether she was set up, or not, there is absolutely no excuse for such a dreadful childish tantrum.

Her parents, especially her father, should be ashamed of the three of them. Clearly they’ve made their spoilt daughter think she was far better than she was. What we saw on the stage, and behind, was what is known as ‘narcissistic rage’. Very ugly!

I doubt she’ll ever get employed now. Silly girl!

  7. Bronny says:

I do believe she was set up, but her reaction was not needed.
With sows like the x factor the contestants must learn to take
It on the chin, and not make a fool of themselves

  8. Nicky says:

I totally get that the producers of this show put it together to get an element of entertainment to keep people watching, but the way that girl handled herself was totally uncalled for. Yes her dream was totally shattered, but even if she had sang anything other than Pink she still didn’t sound that good. She looked amazing, but she looked like Pink and I am pretty sure the producers didn’t tell her what to wear! Getting into this industry is very harsh and if she cannot deal with the boos and the criticism, which she clearly couldn’t, then maybe it was a good thing that this happened. The judges where really nice to her, I thought, and she disrespected them terribly and let herself down in more ways than one. She needs to go away and get some anger management before returning to try again. If that had been my daughter I would be marching her back onto that stage to apologise, not to add fuel to the fire. Losing control of yourself like that is not a nice image for such a stunning looking girl, such a shame!

  9. Nicky says:

I am glad Scary Spice was not there for that one, she would have probably put her in her place right and quick, and her Dad…

  10. Roz says:

Well, she caused a stir for all the WRONG reasons. She can’t sing well, doesn’t look at all original! I’m disgusted with her and her fathers behaviour. Someone call Nanny 911 – quick!!!!!!!!!

  11. Lyraprimrose says:

Even if she was told to sing Pink she was given a second chance and was still RUBBIsH. She is a spoilt brat. We do not need people like that on TV our children watch this prog and do not need to see a young girl acting like that. Her parents should have taken her in hand when she was younger. Pity the poor man that eventually marries het

    • Kate says:

Hang on… Don’t you realise this wasn’t live and was filmed in June? The X Factor don’t give a toss that other young people will be watching and went ahead and kept this audition in the show. They could have cut it out but decided to keep it in to create controversy. They were already low but have now hit rock bottom. I don’t think a TV show where the audience are allowed to goad and boo dillusional people is not, and has never bee, family viewing. I’m suprised that anyone lets their children watch it at all.

  12. Dnc says:

This girl is unhinged… She seemed to think she was going to get through… And she also thought she was good!! Neither of which was true! There were children watching this show and her viscious ugly outburst was disgusting!! Someone like her would never last in the world of showbiz!! Shes lucky then men in white coats didnt come to get her!! What her father thought he was doin is anyones guess… But he made things worse for his daughter!! The whole set up thing is crap… Its an audition, theres no guarantees, you perform your best and you see where you get! This girl was karaoke at pink and awful at emeli sande…. Four no’s was the only outcome she was ever goin to get no matter what she sang!!!!

  13. Eric says:

Having just watched the program with my wife I cannot beleive that that a grown woman actually conducted herself this way and appeared to be actively encouraged to be hostile by her parents.

It’s quite simple, there is no excuse end off. I suspect she has just destroyed the job she said she enjoyed and that no talent agency would consider or risk recemmending her or her family again.

I would also make her liable for the damage to the equipment.

I would however also criticise the X factor for dedicating over 7 minutes of a program which I enjoy to this degrading specticle.

The producers should have taken the lead a left this in the editing bin where it belonged.

  14. Louise says:

Regardless of whether she was set up or not the reason we are all here posting is because her reaction was so shocking. She’s obviously unstable and borderline psychotic. If she had just said “thank you for your time” and walked off the stage she could have saved herself a lot of criticism and humiliation. People like that bring this stuff on themselves. When you sign up for X Factor I’m pretty sure you are fully aware they will edit it to suit themselves…

  15. Lexy says:

This was a disgusting action taken by Zoe Alexander, I did notice though at the end, she was looking back, her Dad and Mum could have been vegging her to do that to rebel against what they considered poor judging. However the X-Factor judges were perfectly unbiased, and were in fact very nutrility of the judges was very good. Although Nathanael does have a point in the way that it could just be a set up. As well as that, it could also be a set up on behalf of Zoe Alexander’s Parents.

  16. Lexy says:

    I fully agree with Louise.

  17. Mel says:

I definately believe she was encouraged to perform a ‘pink’ song as well as to dress up like ‘pink’. What I saw on this clip is the poor girl realising that the producers of X factor set her up into humiliating herself in front of thousands of people on National TV for ther purpose of boosting the shows viewing ratings and entertainment. (which on any level is wrong). I agree her performance on the night would not have put her through regardless of the issue – however saying that had she had proper advice and guidance she may have come better prepared and who knows the outcome?????…. instead x-factor’s main interest in Zoe was to make a spectacle of her talent and the fact that her family were also impersonators.
No fault or blame to the judges through i believe they had no clue! Whoever advised Zoe needs to be disciplined – its a disgrace!
As for Zoe’s tantrum, although i understand her anger she could have handled herself better than that and went down the correct channels of complaint.

    • Christa says:

I 100% agree with this, and would like to add that the producers probably realised how volatile (and vulnerable) this girl was when they set her up. Temper tantrums make excellent ratings. I think they totally manipulated her in the expectation that they’d get something to boost ratings. Disgusting.

  18. Judy says:

Zoe is 22yrs Old !! ~~ ‘A Tantrum’ like that, ‘ IN PUBLIC’ because thing’s haven’t gone HER Way, was worse than My 2yr old Grandaugthter outside The Pet Shop ( She Wanted That Kitten ) BUT I just got HYSTERICS ~~ NOT ‘FILTHY OBSCENITIES’ ~ The ‘WOMAN’ PINK/ZOE ~WAS AVERAGE!!!!!!! PARENTS BEWARE !! Her Father should NOT have become involved ~~ But ALL PUBLICITY is GOOD For Business !! They’ll be in the HEADLINES TOMORROW ~~ Keep ‘The Family’ IN WORK For A While !!!!

  19. Karen says:

Okay if the producers set her up with the song choice this was mean and wrong, however just because she was treated unfairly it didn’t mean that she should rant in a violent manner, go completely mental, throw things, and if (and I say if) what the papers say, that being she smacked a female producer and the police were called then that is just wrong. The girl obviously has anger issues and now her outburst will probably result in one thing- her being famous for being a nutter with an uncontrollable temper. As it is although I’m not saying she may not have a great voice, but on the night her voice was a LOT less than great, so when she’s judged on her performance then what can she expect?

  20. JoN says:

Yes it made a tired show more watchable, yes she was probably set up and yes she reacted really badly, but no one seems to care about what happens next. The X factor gets higher viewing figures and Zoe will struggle for years as a result. Why show it? Where is the responsibility for making a girl a laughing stock when clearly what she needs is help. Sick programme, humiliating people for ratings. And I know she put herself through it but that doesn’t make it right. It should have never been broadcast.

  21. Pearl Phillips says:

I feel so sorry for this poor, set up girl. I’m particularly angry that the judges seemed to deny that she had been told to sing a Pink song.

  22. Steve says:

Zoe is a typical white woman, there you have it!.. I know for a fact that if she was BLACK, lots of racist comments should have been made here!.. Where shes white people, and typical!

  23. Tracey Rodgers says:

Regardless of whether or not she was advised to sing a Pink song, she would I assume still had the choice of actually performing it or not, also she sang a 2nd song. The judges were right it was average…it’s X factor not stars in there eyes. Given the scenario that she had got through, my bet is that she would be a total nightmare to deal with. Nothing wrong with being confident but she thought she was better than she was ..end of!

  24. kello says:

did she call Tulisa a Cocksucker ?

  25. PETE says:

I was appalled. I hope clubs and music pubs don’t book any of this disgustingly foul mouthed family.I would certainly boycott any venue they were booked at.I don’t want to see this uneasy filth anywhere.Least of all on Saturday night FAMILY TV!!!

    • Kate says:

A TV show where the audience are encouraged to boo people for trying their best should never be considered ‘family TV’. The X Factor is a disgrace.

  26. PETE says:

I would also like to say, wasn’t it lucky that Mel B wasn’t on that particular panel. Cat scratch fever! Now that WOULD have boosted ratings. It was reality and there are people like this and we need to know it.Cotton wooling it all up and binning it would not have represented what clubs and promoters have to go through with nightmare people like this family.I would leave a drink in a pub if any of them were anywhere near me.The three of them would get more bookings as ‘THE GLASSERS’. If she WAS set-up,so then are they all.AND ALL HAD A FAIR CHANCE. Mel B should be binned though.Attitude on the panel is worse!

  27. Tracey Rodgers says:

Typical white woman?..what the hell as colour of skin got to do with this?!

  28. Patrick says:

I don’t believe for a second that she was told to sing a Pink song by the producers. I don’t understand anyone that has any sympathy for this kind of ugly, disgusting behavior. One of the previous posts says “she is a typical white woman” this is clearly racist and ignorant. But I do believe is she was black there would be a lot of racist comments and defiantly no sympathy.

  29. Sean says:

She wasn’t even claiming that the producers told to her to sing a Pink song she was claiming that the panel told her to sing a Pink song…. how crazy can you get…?? The evidence is there. She got constructive feedback from the panel, and the reaction of her and her family is there for all to see.

  30. ade says:

I have seen zoe perform several times now and know her really well.

She is a much better singer than that, maybe it was an element of nerves combined with her disappointment at singing a pink song when she rally wanted to do other songs.

The second chance song wasn’t really a second chance because by then she would have realised it was a set up and her head must have been in bits.

    The xfactor w
ill whittle this down to the usual bland finalists, no doubt with an oddball thrown in who is useless, and it will just be a repeat of every other year.

What a shame they went for the quick boost of publicity by doing this to zoe because they would have got so much more had she progressed.

There are moments this girl can make the hairs stand up just by the emotion she puts into her performances.

She will bounce back from this stronger than ever.

Not sure the xfactor will, people are wisening up to how the show operates….

As in Ben Elton’s Chart Throb, the producers want equal numbers of Mingers Blingers and Singers.

Zoe is a singer, they tried to make her a blinger…….. she never will be

    • Jonesy says:

We have all heard her live with the sound backing and echo which unfortunately hides tha real truth about her voice talent…its average.

She was exposed last night and didn’t like it. In all honesty she should never have tried and stuck to what she knows best

    • Dee says:

You’re actually missing the point. It doesn’t matter whether you think she’s good or not (I personally think she’s distinctly average but that too is beside the point) You’ve totally swept over her vile behaviour! If she had just left it at “I was asked to sing a Pink song” and been at least a bit gracious in the face of rejection, it would have been a classy way to handle to handle the situation. As it stands, she’s come out of it looking like maniac – her OWN doing, not the judges or producers’

  31. PETE says:

Ade,she may be a good singer without the nerves that everybody gets. Its called being professional.Basically, she didn’t know what she wanted to be. No-one told her to look or dress as pink, have a similar hairdo and sing a pink song.SHE WAS NOT ZOE ALEXANDER performing. She could have come on in a smart other outfit and sung Grace Jones ‘The River’ or whatever and had good comments. She wasn’t as good as she thought she was.It was an audition not a cabaret agents audition. She blew it.Life is hard, just like she thinks she is. But she is vile, and Ade mate, she would spit you out like old chewing gum. She’ll be exactly the same at forty only fatter.

  32. Wendy says:

I believe she was set up and they knew she would behave badly – I’m not condoning it but she was humiliated and all her professional credibility has gone out the window , she may get novelty bookings off the back of it but she wont ever be taken seriously again , she’ll always be the Pink impersonator who lost her temper on X Factor.

  33. Holly says:

I think she was set up,but I also think her reaction to the criticism was unnecessary and also provoked by her father; As he made her go back on stage…I think she should be banned from the show even if she was set up,as she damaged cameras and back stage equipment.

  34. Jonesy says:

How on earth can she claim she was set-up?? She is an adult and not a child!! If she claims she wanted to get away from Pink and be herself then clearly she could have told them, if indeed that was the case.

The problem was that she came on stage with the belief that she would walk the audtition. Like many contestants she has been led to believe she is great when the reality is that she is a poor average. We have better singers in our local pub’s Karoke.

Even if confused by Pink she got a second chance and was again a poor average singer and no more. Unfortunately she has such a big ego and her parents have protected her from the hard truth. When she was told the truth about her ability she had a tantrum.

If she had at least the decency to say sorry and show humilty she could be forgiven but instead continues to act like a spoilt child and blame everyone but herself.

I wonder what she is like in when told the truth elsewhere??

For me its just another average / poor singer with parents and friends that have protected her from the harsh reality of what we all heard last night

  35. Lola Peidlok says:

All the producers will care about is showing the best entertainment and funniest auditions! Who can blame them?? They are just trying to keep their jobs, that woman was clearly messed up!!

  36. Welsh Girl says:

Sorry Zoe you were rubbish, your attitude stinks and you have a foul mouth. You’re extremely unprofessional and you have let Wales down by your diabolical behaviour. If you were asked to do something you werent happy about you should simply have said NO. If they had insisted you should have walked away but with your pride intact. As it is you are being talked about for all the wrong reasons. No one will employ you now unless its for the audience to laugh at you.

  37. Nicole says:

I dont believe she was set up. Maybe a producer had said something like ‘oh, your a pink tribute act. then im sure you’ll do well if you sing one of her songs.’
She may have misunderstood what the producer had saying. But no matter what had happened, it was a disgraceful display which will sure damage, if not end, her career.

  38. Richard says:

I think it’s a case that “the lady doth protest too much”! She is a Pink lookalike and you can go to her website and see her performing Pink routines at other events. This routine should have been well in her safe zone so it’s difficult to lay any blame on the programme makers if she fluffed it.

  39. Lisse says:

    Emotionally unstable personality disorder!

  40. pete says:

I agree with everyone else that this girl was clearly set up for rating sake. i think they just didn’t expect her to react like that; however I think she reacted then to being made a fool of in front of millions of people. The ramifications to this girl now are far reaching than just ratings…. she will now be vilified on the media, vilified on the internet and probably singled out in a small community in wales. If she wan’t unstable before – she might very well become completely unstable now. It could very well tip someone like that who is obviously very mentally fragile over the edge.

She should never have been allowed to get through… let alone humiliated by the masses.

This is for ratings only – otherwise why would they show it when the auditions were in June? The way she reacted was stupid and immature – but then she should of never been allowed to get up on stage…..

When are we going to do away with these awful awful music talent shows that only consider a commercial side to music and people and start putting money into struggling proper musicians who have struggled to get recordings, respect and recognition through the good old fashioned way of hard work and determination.

  41. Andrew says:

I think there are two groups to blame here.

Firstly Zoe herself over-reacted and could have got her point across better by using her voice without swearing and not by colliding with other people or property. I agree it was not polite nor pretty.

However, I am in doubt whatsoever that this poor girl is one of many individuals for whom public and personal ridciule is engineered for weekend entertainment value. She said “You told me to sing a Pink song” to which the judges replied “No we didn’t”. Both statements are true in a way. I would like to hope the judges themselves are professional/human enough to not be directly involved in such a set up but I’m pretty sure they know a bit about what goes on prior to these live rehersals but perhaps choose to ignore this darker side of X factor. I was not at this live audition, but I supect when she said “You told me..” she meant the producers/backstage crew who no doubt spent quite some time recognising a potential to embarass her and to do this by strongly persuading her Pink song choice so they could then suggest a more appropriate alternative when on stage.

There was a time when this show was “partially” about the search for genuine talent and a minority was the overemphasis of background of contestants/embarassing those who had no talent at all. Sadly over the years this seconday entertainment aspect has taken more and more of a major role.

Zoe, if you ever read this you have my sympathy, in that whilst I think you can sing (just not to a level in the top 1% of the country as the program looks for) I think you were unfairly manipulated into this. Part of me wonders if you realised in those moments on stage this was your only opportunity to make public whats really going on and that swearing was the only way your story would be shown on tv (rather than quietly buried in reels of never used tape). If som smart move Zoe, there are people out there who get the message.

Above all shame on you X factor, for yet more sacrifiing of young and vulnerable peoples hopes after building them with false pretences. A final nail in the coffin in your recent poor Tv ratings which I hope plummet as more people with a moderate or higher IQ appreciate what you’re up to. After years of giving you some leeway, you have finally lost me as a viewer with the above events. Luck for you, you’ll always have new waves of young people watching the show and falling for these tricks. Good luck to them, but not you.

  42. Maureen says:

The programme needs to take a rest of a year or two.

When the programme returns it should try a simpler format similar to that of say pop stars or pop idol.

Its not good for tv to show this type of audition, its not good for real artists who need development its only good for karaoke singers or people who are totally pretentious.

  43. Michael says:

She came on so bubbly with a huge smile, the promo clip talked about her just wanting to please people. At the Cardiff audition they asked her to come along as pink and sing a pink song. I’m not condoning her behaviour, but can any of us imagine how we would feel. You’ve been told to sing and look like pink because it’s your day job and would be great tv. You’ve got through the audition, you come to London and on stage in front of a huge crowd you realise you’ve been set up. Her dream crashing around her. I can’t imagine how that poor girl felt. It should never have been aired on television, because now 3 months after this was recorded she has to relive it through the hateful twitter comments and newspaper articles. It was disgusting TV that exploited a girls dream. Louis Walsh is a complete twat for knocking one more nail into her career coffin.

  44. Maureen says:

Real singers have stayed away from this competition because they know its not about developing them as singers but rather tv ratings.

There is a pre audition stage conducted by people with no knowledge of music but plenty knowledge on the psyche of why people watch this car crash tv. So the programme is about what the producers feel viewers want to watch.

It has been said to me in the past that if the producers decided to make a programme that concentrated on really allowing real singers through and developed them as such that the viewers would be bored.

A shame really as the arts at the moment are suffering as a result of the economic down turn we have got in Britain and real artists are struggling to get heard.

The merest suggestion that should a programme with the potential to promote the arts from an artists perspective be aired and thought of as boring says a lot about the viewers.

In other words the viewers have a morbid fascination watching all ages make a fool of themselves just so the viewers can have a laugh at the mass comedy of errors.

Zoe at 22 struck me as being very immature. Also the way Zoe appeared gave the judging panel a notion that she had already decided for herself what her moulded icon would be. This is aside of what she did with her audition.

On a more serious note had she gone as a blank canvas and sang a straight forward song maybe she would have stood a better chance.

For an audition and I have gone to many professional auditions as a classical singer. You need to wear your hair loose, a minimal amount of make-up, a clean t shirt and a clean pair of jeans or a simple loose dress at your waist. Girls could also get away with wearing a kaftan over leggings. For a bloke again no rash hairdo’s for punk mohican just a tidy appearance tea shirt and jeans.

Seeing a blank appearance means that the judging panel or producers do not get to see a set image and instead they have to think of encouraging you to create one.

A few fun filled workshops on identities and gender studies and a little history of long standing artists on theres done in a workshop/classroom situation is normally enough to encourage the creative thoughts to flow. But this is secondary to the audition itself.

Of primary importance to any audition is ample preparation and this is where the difference between desperate wanabes, natural wanabes and professionals differs the most.

Before every single audition you need to have had at least 6 months vocal training with a qualified singing teacher. Not some Guru who promises to turn you into the next Madonna.

You then need tbat singing teacher to approve of you wanting to do an audition because you A) have developed a basic skill to the extent that you know the difference between naturally singing and belting the living daylights out of your voice. B) you have started to add a few songs to an opening portfolio or repertoire that you can perform well. Say 3 in six months for a beginner. 5 songs for someone who is at an intermediate stage and 7 for someone advanced and working on a 30 minute performance set.

If you are a beginner you are not in a position to audition as you won’t have enough vocal strength in your voice to cope with the pressures of a tv programme. You should wait until your singing teacher says to you that you are an intermediate singer before engaging in any auditions with a view to being rejected. In other words many professional singers in the learning process go in for auditions for the learning experience but they are often rejected because they aren’t stage ready.

Rejection is an essential part of the learning process as you develop your coping systems for when your career just simply isn’t taking off. It’s an opportunity to continue working on your developing voice and your growing repertoire. After two years of training with a singing teacher the apprentice singer and the tutor should be ready to sort out from the total number of songs the student has done in the two years of initial training, which ones are excellent, which ones are good and the average should be discarded.

With the guidance of your singing teacher the apprentice pupil is ready to decide and practice for a demo recording of 1 or 2 songs from the singers excellent repertoire.

This singer should also ready be to audition and break through.

However, beware of the salary bankers. A good singing teacher owes it to a pupil to tell him/her after 13 weeks whether he or she has the potential to be professional singing material. If they don’t and continue to collect singing lesson fees they are not doing you any favours.

In other words a singing teacher really needs to understand how to mentor an individual and show them ways into alternative music careers between 13 and 26 weeks of training.

    Good luck folks.

The whole affair looked and felt entirely set up for the cameras, including the hissy fit that the girl threw. I had to wonder if she was actually auditioning to be an actress. this is tabloid television at its finest. I was never a big x-factor fan, and only flicked the channel out of mild interest. I certainly won’t be watching the rest of the series based on that opening episode.
