Nicholas McDonald has admitted that he’s feeling a little overwhelmed by all the attention he has received since appearing on The X Factor at the weekend.
The Scottish teenager was first featured on Saturday night’s closed room auditions when he performed ‘You Raise Me Up’ for the panel. He won himself a place in the arena rounds and on Sunday we saw him moving the audience in Wembley so much that they gave him a standing ovation after his rendition of A Thousand Years by Christina Perri.
After the crowd of 4,000 people greeted him with thunderous applause, the judges reacted just as positively and Nicole Scherzinger told the teenager:
” Nicholas you have a gorgeous voice, you’re really special. That was a brilliant audition, it was effortless! I genuinely cannot wait to hear your voice again.”
In an interview with STV Nicholas has admitted that the attention from people on the street and online has been very ‘overwhelming’ so far and he explained:
“It’s really overwhelming, I don’t think I’m used to it yet. It’s weird to think everyone is talking about me. I’m not used to it yet, Facebook and Twitter has really blown u and I just seem to be the topic of Scotland and everyone seems to be really proud.”
Nicholas enjoyed performing for the panel and added:
“The performances went great and I can’t wait for the next stage in the competition.”
Gary Barlow was unsure of Nicholas after his first audition and was the only judge to give him a no, saying that he could be a finalist in a year’s time but wasn’t ready for the big time yet.
The Take That star was eating his words in Wembley and told McDonald:
“I thought your audition was ok when we seen you last but today you completely knocked it out of the park, you really did.”
Nick admitted that it was Gary’s advice that spurred him on to change his performing style and shake things up a little in the arena and he’s grateful to the dad of three for the constructive criticism.
“Gary was right and I took on his advice, and I went to the arena auditions and just gave it my all and Gary changed his mind. It was all the hard work I did that paid off and I’m really happy.”
Nicholas thanked his new Twitter fans for all their support and tweeted them saying:
The support over the last few days has been amazing thank you so much everyone ❤#TeamNicky
The support off everyone have been totally amazing and overwhelming thank you so much everyone ❤❤
His performance of ‘A Thousand Years’ has pushed the track back into the iTunes charts and McDonald can’t quite believe it. He wrote:
“A thousand years is now top 10 in the iTunes Charts that’s totally amazing 😃🎤”
