X Factor: Alexandra Burke ‘Mum struggles with my success’

Alexandra Burke has admitted that her mum, Melissa Bell, struggles with her success since winning X Factor.

Bell was a singer of British group Soul II Soul but failed to reach the level of fame she aspired to. It sounds like she’s experiencing some jealousy now that her daughter’s career is reaching heights that hers never did.

Burke told Marie Claire: “I think we’re too alike because we clash. We both sing. She had Soul II Soul but it didn’t last as long as she wanted it to last.

“Then I get this big new show, I win it, and it’s weird for her to see this. Although she’s proud, it’s like she wants to rewind time to when she was younger, when she didn’t have kids.

“I’ve never talked about this, by the way. We’re not a perfect family. Things p*ss me off. She kicked me out. And from 16 to 18-and-a-half I didn’t speak to my family at all. That was the hardest time of my life.”

Burke also told of how her family forced her to audition for the show. She said: “I remember waking up, and was like, ‘Leave me the f**k alone. Stop talking about X Factor, I don’t want to do it’.

“Mum’s already inside with her number, waiting for me. They went ‘No’ to Mum, ‘Yes’ to me.”

    am i understanding that right?
did she audition with her mum but they said no to mum and yes to her?
well that never got edited did it? ooopps!
alex is also in the news today talking about a hate campaign that was inflicted on her by her brothers friends. and that he is ‘off the rails, and needs a father figure etc
im sorry love but keep your dirty washing behind clothes doors. she obviously has a real dislike for her family to be bluntly telling the world about how horrible they are.
i suspect someone has got a bit too big for her jimmy choo’s.
having seen firsthand the favouritism backstage she received from the powers that be, i am not at all surprised.

It must be very hard for anyone musical, in fact its not just hard its soul destroying if your career doesn’t move the way it should, just because you have new responsibilities towards raising a family or maybe its the simple age issue and a person has been descirminated against.

My sympathies go to Alex’s mum in these circumstances and yes there must be things she is regretting now if she could have her time over.

Also even harder for an artist that is established is having to give up from performing.

I think alex has done very well, she should respect and remember that her mum brought her up in the days when her own career was waning. That is a sacrifice that will never be appeased despite any success Alex may have now or in the future.

I can’t help but notice that once fame hits families someone somewhere within always goes off the wall. This is happening to a cousin of Leona’s at the moment, sometimes the cost of fame also places undue pressures and stress on personal relationships often causing them to end. This happened with Jodi Prenger who last year won and played the role of Nancy as part of the Andrew Lloyd Webber searches for new talent.

All in all there will always be costs to fame.

Is this “Mum struggles with my sucess” contrived? This story is getting too much airtime in the papers.Mum doesnt like it now stop whining you extremely lucky(because youve no talent)person.

  5. yummymummy says:

further more if it were her family that forced her into doing xfactor she should be thanking them not slating them!

  6. Maureen says:

So Yummymummy is Alexandra saying that she would not have entered the X factor had she not been forced?

So what kind of commentary has Alexander made that is slating of her family and in particular her mum? All I have read is that she feels her mum is jealous of her success and that could well be true.

It must be difficult for Alexanders mum not to be jealous and envious as her own career seems to have stopped in its tracks.
