X Factor: An analysis of Diana Vickers’ singing problems.
I had to share this excellent analysis of Diana Vickers’ performances that was left by one of our commenters on the Ruth Lorenzo thread.
Needless to say, I totally agree with Michael’s comments, and I wanted to share them with you guys, because I feel that Diana has gone from being a frontrunner in this competition to being one of the weakest acts on X Factor right now.
How did someone go from being the most unique act in the competition to being among the worst? Read on…
I do think that Diana was initially very good though. If you go back to see her first show performance or the cut of her bootcamp version of ‘Alleluia’ you can see what she was made of.
Her voice had a pleasant and pure tone for the songs with an occasional twist of the pitch which complemented her singing and made her stand out. In the following performances, she’d gained the same confidence and charisma Eoghan had shown in the 2 shows before this last one, which made her a big contender.
Everything since her illness has been very weak. All the video clips and judges treatment of her was for damage limitation and since she’d received such acknowledgement of her ‘distinctive’ part of her singing, she’s tried too hard to use it as her unique selling point.
The pressure of her illness scandal also killed off her confidence. Her singing tone has been shaky and weak and she’s trying to rely too much on the vocal twist but she’s accentuating it and taking the pitch up and making it screech.
Her recent singing has not been particularly pleasant to listen to, I’m quite amazed that none of the mentors or vocal coaches have picked up on this and tried to correct it. Additionally, I think the X Factor gossip and fame pressure has given her depression, which has made her the least convincing and weakest of the remaining acts.
If she went back to the stage before the live shows and re-sang ‘Nothing Compares’ in her current state, I dunno if she’d have even made it to the finals. I think she should go, she needs a timeout and a re-think, but the potential will be there for her when she’s older and more comfortable with it all.
Well, what do you think? I reckon Michael’s just about summed it up, especially when he says “everything since her illness has been weak”. And like Michael, I think she needs to back out of the competition now and rebuild her confidence.

i liked Diana until her illness; but since then the quirkiness of her voice has increased to the point where it resembles an apprentice bag-pipe player
I imagine it’s not all fun being away from normal routines and having so many people deciding your future; particularily stressful, would have been her realizing that rules had been bent to allow her to ”miss” a week, and the decision to let her wear hotpants, under her robes, and to have the camera expose what at first glance seemed to be red knickers; after one’s agreed to do that, what does it matter what you agree to………….?
The stress can be seen in the increased activity of her hand round her face; i feel sorry for her and now that Laura has been out, wouldnt mind her winning…………….
I LOVE DIANA!! I want her to win but i kinda understand what michael means…. the illness and bad press have knocked her confidence…. she will return to her old ways this week!! it will be the comeback week!!
JLS and Eoghan are worse than Diana. She should be in the final!
From the begin i did like diana perform from the bootcamp but after then she was just so weak and she is should try to balance her voice as wel wen she sang because i think that she is try copy other singer voice but she should let it out her voice i mean naturally then she be fine , she should nt even sang those kind songs as wel not suit her voice she should sing like alanis morrisette songs it probly suit her more how rubbish the x factor , she need to have a break and more pratice more for her voice, but alexanderrrrrrrr my god u are amazin wel done beacuse you deserver to win i always cheer up for you , cos from the begining you didnt even once made a mistake of songs or anythin to ruin your voice and how i know you are a probfessional singer leona lewis would scare now if you goin to win this rubbish show , it al bout judges but it shouldnt be they to focus on a singers they seem dnt care it because of the x factor so they fight of eacother beauty and alot more but it not for them , the show it particular for good singers like performers everything not themself

Diana is still unique,and possesses her own style. I love the no shoes on, piercing eyes and messy hair look! She is doing her thing! She still has a unique voice and I love her, even though she has had a tough time lately she deserves a chance!
Why arent people talking about the talentless JlS who screech on stage or the very weak eoghan. They have nothing to offer, at least she has some x factor, some style!

I agree with Flower. Diana can’t sing; her voice grates on my nerves and sounds akin to a strangled cat. Horrible… I just wonder if the judges are hearing something different to what I’m hearing.
I disagree completely I think you’re talking rubbish, and
pompous rubbish at that. Diana has a versatile voice and
obviously she is very young and needs a bit of technique
so she doesn’t strain her voice, but if you compare
her White Flag or Wish or Without You – which are haunting – to her version of Call Me – you see how versatile she is.

I personally think she was shit as a singer. Hearing her once is enough then it became like a scratched record applying her same technique to all songs she sang. She is just someone who is pursuing the life of the rich and famous without having to work for it.
Clever I must say but not enuff. She should now go back and get a decent education and grow up.
diana vickers is an alright singer . im not surprised she didnt get into the final but she is an alright singer. i think diana is a really nice person though xx
to be completely honest. diana is an o.k singer. she shouldnt have even got tp the semi finals. i likes her at first and then she just went downhil at thje live shows !! :@
diana is a really good singer she should have made it to the final just seeing the tears in eoghans eyes. I think her and eoghan will have something for a few years bye xxxxxxxxxxxx
