The mother of X Factor contestant Ashley McKenzie has this week leapt to his defence and insisted: “My son is not cocky.”

Maxine Gatt, 41, of Northcote Road, Croydon, has been hurt by criticism which has seen her boy labelled “arrogant”.

The 20-year-old reached the final eight of the ITV1 talent show on Saturday night, but has seen his chances of winning damaged by claims he is too cocky.

Maxine said: “He’s a genuinely nice guy who is representing Croydon. He is putting his heart into this.”
