X Factor Chart: Saturday 2nd December 2006

Leona Lewis: X Factor ContestantThese charts are getting easier (and shorter) as each week passes.

They are also becoming more and more predictable. Leona and Ben have topped my personal chart every week and this week is no different to any other:

1) Leona Lewis: I loved Leona’s performance of ‘Could It Be Magic’. It was upbeat and fun. Leona is growing in confidence each week and her version of ‘Without You’ was breathtaking.

Ben Mills: X Factor Contestant2) Ben Mills: Bens first song, ‘I made it through the rain’ was a bit predictable. It started quietly then built to a huge crescendo ending. I liked it but it wasn’t his strongest performance yet. His second song however was a different story. Ben chose to sing ‘Somebody To Love’, accapella style with only a choir for backup. Not only was this brave but it was a wise choice. It was a little different and Ben put his heart and soul into the whole thing.

3) Ray Quinn: I liked the side of Ray we were allowed to see tonight. No cheesiness, no spins, just Ray, singing and meaning it. I still think Ray would be better suited to the West End than Wembley Arena but he was good tonight.

4) The MacDonald Brothers: The boys were clad in tartan tonight…in case any of us forgot where they were from! Their first song ‘Can’t Smile’ was a bit boring and uninspiring but thier version of ‘Shang A Lang’ was at least some fun. It wasn’t overly strong on the vocal front, but the boys enjoyed it and it was nice to see them have some confidence in themselves.

  1. Very accurate Tabby, i think a lot of people who watch the show don’t realize how difficult it is to perform live on such a large scale as this show is. Leona is always very professional in everything she does, and always gives a flawless performance every single week.
That says so much to me, considering she is just starting out.

I spent eight years in a semi pro duo doing mainly pubs, working mens clubs, holiday camps and night clubs and can really understand what these guys go through each week. The pressure that they go through compared to say a couple of hundred people as i was used to, is obviously so much more.

Iv’e read a lot of stuff on the net about people saying that Leona is just a cheap copy of Maria Carey,i totally disagree with this, most people that i’ve talked to about the show and about Leona can see the potential in Leona as an artist just starting out. The talent is there in bucket loads, she just needs a bit of time and experience IMHO.

Ben, did a great job on the Queen number tonight.I could see how much he put into it… good stuff Ben :)

Second track Ray did tonight was really good, his confidence in himself really showed, and i enjoyed the song from start to finish.

    Cheers,
    GP.

  2. ROD BELL says:

On the show tonight were varied performances, MacDonalds sang the Manilow song as its always sung, not much you can do with it, Ray did a fine performance of Mandy,I was so glad it wasn’t swing style. Ben sang I made it through the rain from the heart, Leona was amazing on Could it be magic vocally but she’s very uncomfortable doing dance moves,Ive never heard a bad version of that song though.MacDonalds with Shang a lang brought some fun back, Bay City Rollers were massive for a while and even in the States too, Ray gave the performance of the night with My Way absolutely brilliant, had this been the final that should have won it for him on the night.Ben only slightly behind with an awesome vocal show on Somebody to love, brave and very hard to control and succeed with but he did it superbly, Leona and Without You as ever excellent vocal performance but this song now is always done like this and is wheeled out time and time again in shows like this, She did it better than most but not up to Mariah Carey.Overall most tried something challenging and different, Ray and Ben particularly who on this weeks performances should be the 2 finalists now.Rod,Newcastle

  3. rah says:

ROD:-I’ve only heard two versions of “Could it be Magic”
barry’s and Take-that. One of them is definitely a bad version.

  4. ROD BELL says:

Well Rah over the wide spectrum of artistes in the music business I have heard no less than 15 recordings oc Could it be magic, there are many more, Ive also heard many artistes perform it live too, many with very different takes on the song, all good and impressive, thats my opinion and you have yours, the 2 versions only you list are 1 by the writer of the song, the 2nd by a massive boyband, you dont say which you dislike but to me they are both totallt different takes on the song and both work depending on anyones music tastes. Rod,Newcastle

  5. Lola says:

I agree with you Tabby Katt re Ray – he is definately better suited to west End stage etc

I also agree Ben’s 2nd song was fantastic – very reminiscent of Bo Bice in American Idol who also sang accapella

However I am still of the impression that Ben’s career will last longer and be stronger if he doesn’t actually win asd he will have more control over what he does and he won’t have the ‘curse’ (dare I say) of being a reality tv show singing competition winner…

  6. ROD BELL says:

I agree 100% with you Lola, Ben was superb on the Queen song and I sort of wish Sharon would do for Ben what Louis is for ETON ROAD, Bens career would I think be nurtured more freely by someone like her than in the way ot may lose out under Simons control. Ben is amazing and unique.ROD,Newcastle

  7. mina says:

leonas without you was just so fab!!!
    she deserves to win!!
leona and ray in the final!!

  8. rah says:

I said this in another section but repeat it here.

Leonas ‘I will always love you’ and ‘ Without you’ belong on ‘Stars in their eyes’ not ‘X factor’.

She works best on songs where she makes her own arrangments and style, thats where the worldwide big praise has been going. These mimic performances can only damage her reputation, all she needs to do now is Celine Dione and her credibility will be gone completely.

  9. rah says:

Rod: The Barry Manilow version is superb, its on YouTube.

  10. ROD BELL says:

Aagh Rah, actually I bought Barry singing ‘Could it be magic, I get hammered for having him in my record/CD collection but he did it really good, I also like his track ‘Read em and weep’.I like wide ranges in music, thanks for the tip, I have to say I enjoyed Manilow week more than I thought I would and also felt he gave very constructive and supportive guidance to the acts too, perhaps more than their own mentors have in the show to date. Thanks Rah,Rod.
