X Factor singer Joe McElderry is said to be terrified of winning the show and of all the fame that the title will bring.

Naturally quiet Joe has reportedly been overwhelmed by the fan and media attention he has received in recent weeks, particularly when he went home to South Shields a few weeks ago.

A friend of Joe’s told the Daily Star Sunday:

“Joe is finding it hard to adjust.

“He doesn’t really want the fame and fortune, he just loves singing and performing.

“He’s scared if he wins he won’t be able to do all the things he likes.”

His gran Hilda Joyce told the newspaper: “You just hope he keeps his feet on the ground.

“He’s a very sensible young man. But there are dangers out there.”

She added: “When he came back, he said his heart lifted when he saw the Tyne Bridge. It’s been his first time away from home, apart from holidays, so that takes some getting used to.”

Another family member said: “Joe’s a real local lad who loves spending time with his family and friends. But having all those people outside your home and getting mobbed everywhere you go isn’t easy.

“I think Joe knows it’s going to be hard to have the life he did and that’s quite difficult to take.”
