X Factor: Mariah Carey performs I Want To Know What Love Is

On tonight’s X Factor Mariah Carey performed her newest single ‘I Want To Know What Love Is.’ It is the second single to be taken from her 11th LP Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel.

Mariah refreshingly wore a beautiful black dress instead of her usual next-to-nothing. I have to say, she was looking a little fuller figured (by which I mean chubby) tonight – I wonder if we’ll be treated to speculation about Mariah being pregnant in tomorrow’s papers? And wow, a vocal return to the glass-shattering high notes of yesteryear as well. What did you guys think of the Mariah performance?

Mariah clearly mimed. For someone of her supposed pedigree, that was a bit of a let down. SuBo stole the show.

an amazing performance, definitely not lipped, she wouldn’t have dragged her backing singers across the pond for a mimed performance, if you have any doubts about the whistle, watch the Alan Carr performance, I can’t believe she is still so good vocally

  2. Lawrence says:

How can you say she lipped it? It was clearly live. You could tell she had a little difficulty with some of the high monotone notes, but still managed to hit them. And the final whistle note, she didn’t stay in tune with the music. But pulled it together before the note was finished. Also, how was it a let down. She did an amazing performance. Sure it wasn’t a Madonna lip-synched acrobatic show, but it was an emotional experience. In my opinion, I wish Mariah would only do little intimate shows now. Little spots where it only fits like 10-25 people. That way you feel connected to the music and Mariah Carey lets loose at such events. Her intimate concert in NY was amazing. She totally interacted with the crowd and everything. I just wish I had been able to get right in front of her. Maybe she would have talked to me lol.
Oh, and just wanted to say that this year’s X-Factor contestants are nowhere near as good as last years. Last year they had some amazing singers. I wonder where they are coming from. In 2000 they did a poll and the UK was voted worst singers in the world. Now they have contestants so good that they are on par or maybe even better then the American Idol contestants. Not that I mind or anything, I love hearing great singers. I think Simon is doing some secret work behind the scenes. Like purposely finding great singers.

If one thinks that was mimed then they need glasses and a cochlea transplant because I have watched mariah sing live and mime things in the past, and i am not one of those who defend her till the cows come home i can tell when she lips, like her last x factor performance which was pre-recorded vocal! however this was completely live and she is in good voice, brilliant performance loads of people i know have txt to say how surprised they were at her singing live here in the uk as she tends not to anymore but all i can say is WOW ! amazing and to all the people who say she mimed ???? i just dont get you, i dont like some artists like black eyed peas i absolutely hate but fair dues they sang live on x-factor and i would never accuse if it wasn’t true its just a shame others dont show Mariah the same fairness oh well i doubt it makes a difference to her multi million pound bank balance and already well established music career………..

  4. Michael says:

Sorry guys and trust me I do love Mariah but I am still absolutely convinced that was not live. It just didn’t sound live – sounded exactly like the record and usually there will be something a bit different to the recording, even if very small. My opinion admittedly but I’ve seen her sing live on TV many times over her years and that just didn’t ring true as a live vocal. If I’m wrong, I apologise but it’s just the way I read it.

  5. Topman says:

Sounds exactly like the record? There are so many differences that I won’t even begin to point them out. The first chorus had a loud backing track which she sung along with but it seems people have taken this to mean the whole performance was mimed which isn’t true. It’s a shame that Mariah Carey can’t seem to get credit when she puts on a good show these days.

  6. yves says:

    wow…amazing as always!!it’s 100% live…

  7. smith mr says:

Not sung live, at most she sang along with a backing track.
Part way through she stopped singing and smiled and the vocals carried on, amazing lol

Obviously sang along to a backing track or they turned the mic volume up towards the ending.

Wake up anybody who thinks different.

  8. ozzycee says:

You guys must be such morons if you couldn’t see how out of sync she was to the music!! She is very good at actiong and “pretending” that the high notes were hard to hit.. doesn’t make it live!! She is terrible, but what’s worse is that she’s terrible at miming! Watch it back and you’ll see what I mean!

  9. Ricky says:

Defo mimed it, was at the live shows last week when it was supposed to be Shakira performing and mariah carey walked out on stage? They pre record the song and then have a week to fine tune the vocals and edit the performance and then it goes out the following week so if you think that was live its simply not.
The supposed live performance shown on tv and the performance she gave last week are completley different, i dont know how they do it but its clearly not live and her voice was edited.
Anyways the version of the song was dreadful compared to the original written by Mick Jones and performed by Foreigner.

  10. Dink says:

MC Definatley mimed her performance on X Factor last night. It may not be the same as the published recording but no way was she singing it live. Anyone who has eyes and ears could tell they didn’t match. SB, on the other hand, sang it right in front on your eyes. Full credit to her!

  11. Mim says:

Well i really want to know the truth. After her performance on xfaxtor last night i was left with goosebumps at the thought of it being live, it sounded amazing. On the other hand tho, if it was mimmed, i’m very unimpressed & think she of all people should have the guts to go for it, & for her fans…showing people what they love her for. they would have far more respect for her if she sang live, even if it wasn’t pitch perfect at least she’d be doing her job. People dont always want perfection, an authentic performance would’ve won her many more fans.

  12. MC fan says:

This is a LIVE performance, not mimed. I think the best evidence is that she becomes really pitchy (off-key) at times, especially at 3:00 and 3:44. If it’s pre-recorded why would they record it off key?

Really, Mariah has had some really bad performances live of late, showing you that she still is not miming for other shows. All you haters that want to believe that Mariah can’t do it anymore, get a life.

    • smith mr says:

Why is it off key at certain points?

Easy – because as mentioned above it was not the release version of the track but a pre recorded xfactor special version, some mistakes attempt to promote authenticity.

Cheryl Cole did the same thing – she pre recorded a vocal take and then sang along with it. The screechy recorded vocals were intentially not mixed down correctly and therefore gave them a live sound with over the top reverb effect.
Its an attempt to trick the viewer into thinking its all live.
I dont think bad of Cheryl for this, her song and performance was not about a vocal performance where as Mariah the singing diva everybody on the show aspires to be like should be ashamed.

Either sing live or dont bother because watching your fingers tap away as though they are playing the notes on a piano is not great in terms of a performance.

  13. Ricky says:

MC fan you are completely wrong, it was not live!!! It was pre-recorded

    Dont be so dumb

  14. Rev says:

MC was not singing live. It is a new trick being played more often these days where singers mime to a newly created vocal recording which is not worked on as much at the CD version. This gives the impression of a live vocal as they leave imperfection in there.

I find it hard to believe that MC can still hit the high notes like she used to. Her voice is so weak these days she sings normal notes as if she was whispering – so faded and dull. I suspect the notes in this song have been taken from old recordings and reused as if she could produce them today.

I hope even the biggest MC fan would agree she does not sing like she used to live or not the evidence for that is clear.

People who still believe she can sing like she used to in the 90’s should think back to MC singing Hero for XFactor, she looks so scared, knowing herself that she cannot sing this song anymore and leaves out all the high notes. If she really can sing the high notes for ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ why wouldn’t she chuck a few in last year for Hero.

The comments that people are coming up with for why it IS LIVE i.e. it has vocal erros, out of tune, doesn’t hit the note right etc well yes, all these are true and it’s because she can’t and this extends to the ‘live’ recordings. The recordings beging made to mime along to in an attempt to make people think they are live seem to be working, what a shame. I guess we will be seeing even more of these from now on.
