X Factor News: Is Leona Lewis’ single ‘Collide’ a rip off of DJ Avicii’s ‘Penguin’?
Leona Lewis was oh so excited about her comeback single and now it seems that the track may not even get a full release.
The track, titled ‘Collide’ was given it’s first airplay on Scott Mills’ Radio 1 show yesterday and was supposed to mark a change in direction for the former X Factor winner. It was a move from power ballads to the more commercial dance market, however within hours of the single being played, Ministry Of Sound had started legal proceedings against Simon Cowell’s record label, claiming that it ripped off an instrumental section from Swedish DJ Avicii’s track ‘Penguin’.
A Ministry Of Sound source confirmed that they had sent a legal letter to Cowell’s team and told The Sun:
“Leona Lewis has stolen our record. Collide is identical to Avicii’s track.
“We’ve been working on this release for a year, then this week we heard Leona’s track. Obviously Avicii is pretty upset about this.
“A legal letter was sent to Simon Cowell and our lawyers have said they will take the appropriate action over the song.
“Surely if Leona knew how similar her track is to DJ Avicii’s song she wouldn’t have decided to press ahead with the release?”
But a Syco responded to the claims, saying:
“There is zero legal case to answer. Avicii is already credited as a songwriter on Leona’s song.
“It’s a case of sour grapes from Ministry Of Sound.”
