X Factor: Ruth Lorenzo gets booted by the public

Wow. Shocking. Ruth Lorenzo’s X Factor journey came to an abrupt end tonight.

Louis Walsh was in tears. No longer will he be able to call her a “little Spanish rock chick”.

In the bottom two along with Ruth was Eoghan Quigg, which throws my theories about the power of the teen vote into complete disarray!

Anyway, I laughed at Dermot’s quick interview with Ruth right at the end – he said “Well Ruth, you kind of came from nowhere…” And she gave him this look that said “I came from Spain, you tool. Weren’t you listening to that part every single week?”

The question is, would you buy a Ruth Lorenzo record?

Now, before you start commenting in BIG ANGRY LETTERS, think about it for a moment. How were they going to market Ruth? Who’s buying power ballads these days? How many records can a busty Spanish rock chick hope to sell in the 00’s?

In case you didn’t notice, Ruth’s departure leaves Dannii Minogue without an act now. Will she go on the offensive against Louis? I doubt it, she’s not as vindictive as Senor Walsh. Poor Dannii, and after her winning big last year with…Leon.

What happened here. I thought this was a singing contest!! Ruth gave amazing passionate performances and can sing. This just about sums up the mentality of the British public with regards to real talent. We are sure the judges wouldn’t have voted Ruth off – puts me off watching any more. By rights Alexandra should win now but who knows!!! Ruth had an original talent and if she records an album, we will buy it. VERY DISAPPOINTED. I think Simon Cowell should have said what he did when Laura was voted off – that he disagreed with the public.

  2. Elisabeth. says:

Plus, I agree 100% what Gary said. Ruth is Spanish, therefore not from the UK. In the first part of the show, if you remember, Simon commented that he was ‘Proud to be British’ because of Alexandra’s singing voice. If Ruth was British, she would have won hands down.

  3. @Gary: Cool down dude – most of the people on this thread are leaving comments of support for Ruth! Yes, voting area is important, but I actually thought Ruth would have left much earlier than she did.

And as for Eoghan Quigg – No, not all of Northern Ireland are in support of him. That’s where we (Unreality TV) are based, and I’ve spoken to enough people to know that it’s not universal support in NI. In fact, I’m favouring Alexandra Burke at this stage.

That’s not to say we’re not proud of what Eoghan has accomplished, but could we honestly call him our favourite, or the one we want to see with a record deal? No. Not at all.

  4. john says:

ruth is shit nobody wud buy her tracks. Alexandra is annoying and i wudn buy her albums. diana vickers has to win this competition. Lovely voice unlike ruth and alex who shout out the lyrics

  5. Rachel K says:

    so angry.
i definetely wont be watching the final.
the only thing unique about Diana is the fact she is the only contestant with zero talent.
    what’s quirky about her?
the fact she wears no shoes and her singing sounds like she’s struggling for oxygen?
    NOTHING natural about her voice.
and CERTAINLY NOTHING pleasing to listen to.
I really dont get how Ruth’s flawless perfomances and breathtaking passion didn’t keep her in.

  6. Kate says:

I dont think Ruth deserved to go, I think JLS did on the night but whats happened has happened. The only reason that Louis has turned on Diana is tactical..its because Cheryl is the only judge with 2 acts left and out of Diana and Alexandra it was much easier to pick on Diana. I dont care what anyone says Diana is my favourite and always will be till the end. Even if she doesnt win, (which I hope she does) I will still bet she gets a record deal and when she does I will buy her album because I think she is wonderfully talented. She might not be everyones taste but she is brilliant and is much more unique than any of the acts left. Any of the acts that are left could win so instead of complaining maybe people should vote for their favourite. Someone has to go out and people are always going to be upset but the competition goes on. I think everyone is talented this year but I hope Diana wins.

  7. stevey says:

I’m with John on this one. Nobody would buy Ruth’s album, who ever said she is better than Leona Lewis needs her ears tested! And as for the whole crying thing with Alexandra – Oh dear! She had nothing to be emotional about whatsoever and yet she cries her eyes out… Diana is amazing – her voice is unique and lets face it – she’s buff!

  8. sean says:

ruth should not of gone out she was one of the best there

  9. leah jones says:

  11. leah jones says:

    OWEN 2 WINNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. leah jones says:

I HATED RUTH SHE GOT LAURA OUT SO POO

  13. marshmallow says:

This is what happens when you turn a singing contest to a popularity contest. Ruth never stood a chance cos lets face it most of the votes come from friends and family and school friends and sisters’ friends, etc etc. Ruth dint grow up here and now the judges couldnt keep her in, it was only a matter of time.

I won’t be watching x-factor anymore cos its so not fair what happened. I guess that’s why Leon from last year is dead and buried – more Family Members + Friends (in Britain added +) + less talent = X FACTOR WINNER!!!

  14. angela says:

    gutted ruth went!!
JLS and diana to go next!
i love eoghan but thought his performances were shit
i got so angry wen he started singing both songs
ruth is amazing and i will definately buy her album if she brings one out

  15. Noel Coupland says:

Ruth may be out of the show, but she can always find work as a joiner, as, according to the judges she has nailed all the songs that she has performed, she even made the stage her own apparently.
Dermot o’Dreary seems to have learned his presenting skills from his old buddy Davina, shouting and gurning at the end of every sentence.
Wonder who does young Diane’s hair, David Blunkett? and is she really a better singer than Ruth?

  16. Ian says:

Ruth being voted off x factor has to be the biggest fix on x factor
she pulled of an amazing version of bon jovi’s always
and i will miss her like many others i would buy an album from the
    Spanish Diva she is amazing
so sad to see her go
jls to go out next they are the pits the only one left who is any good now is alexandra go girl go

  17. Sean says:

To those people who said that Diana should win becasue she’s got a ‘unique’ sound: if I stuck my hand up my dog’s backside, I’m sure she’d make a sound that was quite ‘unique’. It wouldn’t mean it was pleasant to the ear and people would want to buy it though.

Diana and Eoghan just weren’t in the same league as Ruth and Alexandra – it was actually embarrasing to think that they were competing. I nearly threw my remote through the TV when Cowell told Eoghan that ‘he was through to the semi’s with his last performance’ – what, the performance where he ‘danced’ in the middle of a group of other people who were singing louder and better than him? Basically, what Cowell meant was ‘you’re through to the next round as it’s a fix and as long as you didn’t fall over, freeze or suddenly be consumed by a violent bout of Tourette’s the public will be daft enough to believe that you were good enough to get through’.

At least I hope that’s the case because if not it means that there are a number of seriously dillusional people out there, tone deaf and with no sense of fair play. The difference between the X Factor and Strictly (if you compare the John Sargeant to the Eoghan / Diane situation) is that in strictly it IS purely supposed to be entertainment – you take people who can’t dance and see if they can pull out a semi-decent performance. These people are ‘celebrities’ before the show.

With X Factor the whole point is the winner should be the person with the most talent, most flair, most ‘wow’ factor – and I’m sorry that Eoghan and Diane just don’t, whereas Ruth and Laura did. Diana sounds like she has a banana shoved up her nose and her bare beet ‘prancing’ on the stage, especially after Louis stated ‘is that all you can do?’ was comical. And Eoghan looks like a group of ferrets have taken up residence on his head. did anyone see Harry Hill’s TV Burp skit on his ‘please vote for me’ face? Nearly wet myself when Eoghan pulled that same ‘I’m cute me’ look for a full 30 seconds. My kids laughed so hard I thought they were having a seizure.
Also – JLS were a good group but Louis has managed to ‘blandify’ them down to Westlife’s standards, coz that’s all he knows. There’s no spark left and they look disillusioned with the whole event.

Oh well – rant over. I can’t believe I’ve just sacrificed 20 mins of my life writing about the X Factor on a public forum! Shows how unjust I felt the whole event was. Won’t be watching it any more though, and if Alex doesn’t win then the whole event is a waste of space as she is the only real talent left.

Look out for Eoghan’s album of High School Musical covers and Diane’s album of covers of nasal banana renditions.

  18. Michael says:

I agree totally with most of what Sean wrote. I do think that Diana was initially very good though. If you go back to see her first show performance or the cut of her bootcamp version of ‘Alleluia’ you can see what she was made of.

Her voice had a pleasent and pure tone for the songs with an occassional twist of the pitch which complemented her singing and made her stand out. In the following performances, she’d gained the same confidence and charisma Eoghan had shown in the 2 shows before this last one, which made her a big contender.

Everything since her illness has been very weak. All the video clips and judges treatment of her was for damage limitation and since she’d received such acknowledgement of her ‘distinctive’ part of her singing, she’s tried too hard to use it as her unique selling point.

The pressure of her illness scandall also killed off her confidence. Her singing tone has been shakey and weak and she’s trying to rely too much on the vocal twist but she’s accentuating it and taking the pitch up and making it screech.

Her recent singing has not been particularly pleasent to listen to, I’m quite amazed that none of the mentors or vocal coaches have picked up on this and tried to correct it. Additionally, I think the X Factor gossip and fame pressure has given her depression, which has made her the least convincing and weakest of the remaining acts.

If she went back to the stage before the live shows and re-sang ‘Nothing Compares’ in her current state, I dunno if she’d have even made it to the finals. I think she should go, she needs a timeout and a re-think, but the potential will be there for her when she’s older and more comfortable with it all.

  19. chris says:

Something seriously wrong with British public man,,,if they had not seen the talent, what else they had voted for ?

Face it guys this is not America, this is little britian !!! talent and capabilties has got no say here.

The show has lost its essence and thrill, i am sure not watching it anymore.

  20. Dave says:

This year’s X-Factor has been a joke with too many good singers going out too early. However u need to realise that many of the young teen fans who are keeping in the cute but mediocre Diana & Eoghan are probably voting 20-30 times for their favourite. As Ruth appeals largely to the non High School Musical brigade, how many of them were prepared to match that level of voting ? Not so many, I suspect.

If this was a serious singing competition rather than an ITV revenue raising event, there would be a rule of just one vote per phone number which would eliminate the distorting affect of multiple voting.

The other change I’d like to see is instead of voting FOR one contestant each week, you actually vote ‘AGAINST’ the contestant who you think doesn’t deserve to go any further in the competition. In this way, the majority of voters could target the rubbish singers early on in the series and there would be more chance of the truely talented singers like Austin, Laura and Ruth going farther in the competition.

  21. [...] I had to share this excellent analysis of Diana Vickers’ performances that was left by one of our commenters on the Ruth Lorenzo thread. [...]

  22. Denis says:

Ruth is such a loss and im praying she dose bring out an album cos i would definatly get it , i think its a shock to everyone that she went this week and again a case of people thinking she is save because of her outstanding performances , i understand why teens are voting for Eoighn and JLS but really they are not going to have long lasting careers this competition is for people like Ruth and Alexandria who are extreamly talented and rely soly on their voices and could have a promising career for years. I think people also tent to think of the UK as the only market that they would be targeting where as Ruth will obviously have a huge market in Spain and Latin america where there is a huge market and she already has a fan base from the amount of posts on websites about her from all over the world, i cant wait for her album to be released and there is a report that she was in meetings yesterday with Simon to discuss a record deal

  23. Mandy says:

Yes I would buy Ruths record, she was awesome. I would go to a show with Ruth in she fills that stage with her personality.

Alexander must win. Is it my imagination or are they starting to stlye her in the Leon look!!!

Eoghan no way!!! Wish people wouldn’t vote because he is young, cute with a wild hair do. Suits a school musical.

Disappointed in JLS, thought they were excellant and would win at first, but they have not impressed in the last couple of weeks. Having said that out of what is left would vote them second.

As for Diana, Oh dear!!! how has she come this far, yes she can sing, but the way she pronounces some of the words and has that yelpy catch to her voice we find irritating, could not listen to that on a recording. Her voice would do well in country and western singing they do that sort of thing.

  24. glyn says:

I will by ruth’s cd any day she is the best rock singer in the world

  25. Michael says:

To add to the topic, Ruth was far and away my favourite act in the show this year. She was the reason I kept watching the show after Laura left and Diana lost her edge. As a contestant she was the best overall, I think.

From the earlier weeks, it was quite apparant Ruth wasn’t going to win the show by voter popularity, with a lot of acts getting regional support (and Eoghan, who has a huge maternal and pre-teen appeal going on) so it became a matter of how far she could take herself.

The format is set with the idea of ultimate versatility so the stars can re-invent themselves like Madonna does if tastes change for the sake of a long, successful career. Though what you get in the end is a faceless product (like Leon) who can struggle to establish an identity once the show hype is over.

Not only this, you don’t get to see what the contestants can REALLY do. Imagine Frank Sinatra not making it because he couldn’t do hip-hop. Laura suffered the most from the format, though in Ruth’s case going into the showdowns allowed her to establish her identity.

Alexandra is probably the perfect contestant for the X Factor panel, she’s a performing talent that stretches across the different genres and she ticks all the boxes. For me though, she’s the best winner because the way the show is set out is flawed.

For me, Alexandra lacks the same performing identity as Ruth, and that’s the real key to success beyond the show. She has the real X Factor, Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door was powerful.

So I’m pleased Ruth didn’t win as I think it would have hurt her freedom as an artist, though in all fairness she really should have made the semi final even against the high vote scorers like JLS or Diana on merit.

  26. Kate says:

I am a teenage girl of 15 and normally in the Xfactor I would be supporting acts like Diana Vickers or JLS- and I was…at first! But then I heard Ruth’s rendition of purple rain and I was absolutely astounded, I mean it moved me. Aswell as regonizing the talent she possesed I could really feel the emotion in the song. I thought her version of Summer time was really good too, and her version of knocking on heaven’s door…wow!
I would buy her record! I’ve listened to her song’s countless times on youtube and aswell as being vocally amazing, you can really feel the passion and emotion in her voice.

  27. cloudye says:

Apart from being by far the most talented vocalist, Ruth Lorenzo has personality plus and an inner beauty that any human being would be envious of. Her complete journey on the Xfactor has endeared her to many, many people and she WILL be a huge star worldwide.
The only thing that stands in her way is the restrictive contract that does not allow an Xfactor contestant to start and capitalise on their talent until at least a year after the show has finished.
I for one am prepared to wait it out but Saturday nights are not going to be the same as Ruth will not longer grace our screens and the Xfactor is less of a real talent competition than ever before.

  28. [...] was voted out on Saturday night, and we received a storm of comments complaining that Eoghan or Diana should have [...]

  29. Loz says:

Have to agree with much of what has already been said but would add that in my opinion the whole show was, and is, engineered with one or two selected winners in mind. Ruth was never going to be allowed to win – hence Simon Cowells’ comment to Alex that ‘this is a British competition’ and also afterwards on Xtra Factor to Holly, that they never expected Ruth to go so far! Very naive of me, I know, but I used to think that the final 12 were chosen because all of them were believed to be in with a chance of winning!
I’m sure that’s what they believed as well! Turns out they were all cannon fodder to showcase the chosen two. Pretty obvious when you look at the judges comments – Eughan and Diana (and JLS to some extent) spring to mind being given rave reviews for mediocre performances, yet I don’t think Ruths’ vocal talent was ever positively commented on by any of the judges – correct me if I’m wrong. In all honesty, I think Ruth was supposed to be out in the first sing off, which is why Simon sent it to the votes. Thank goodness the GBP had seen her talent that week! Purple Rain proved them right and gained her a wealth of fans and in the second sing off I think they all realised that her performance of Heavens Door was so superior to Lauras’ version of Over the Rainbow that to be in any way credible they had no choice but to send Laura home!
Ruth had become a problem by the time last weeks’ show was on. If she had gone through to this week she would have been competing against the chosen two – Alexandra and Diana – so they pulled out all the stops to prevent that – she’s Spanish and she might actually have won!
Ruth is my winner anyway. Alexandra has a technically brilliant voice and Diana, on form and with the right song, has something, but both lack the X Factor for me.
And in answer to your question – I will be buying Ruths’ albums!

  30. Dervla says:

Umm…. It was not the bottom 2 it was all public vote on Saturday night! So actually Ruth was voted off fairly.Yes she was an amazing singer but obviously people thought Eoghan,Diana, Alexandra & JLS were better.
Eoghan is going to win … i live near him & he has so much support!

  31. Dervla says:

Just because Ruth had a powerful voice dosen’t mean shes better! There are DIFFERENT types of singers out there & if everyone is looking for a “powerful singer” then you may as well not watch the X factor!
Eoghan has had hardly any critiscism throughout the whole series from the judges & quite frankly I think the know more about music than the lot of you put together!

  32. haxel says:

I just watched the reruns and I cant believe the other rubbish got through and ruth didnt her performance made the hairs on my arms stick up

again list austin and laura white ruth now has been robbed what on earth are you guys thinking
