X Factor: Simon Cowell admits he loved his ‘punch up’ with The Voice

Simon Cowell has admitted that he invested everything he had, in making sure Britain’s Got Talent beat The Voice in the recent ratings battle.

The final of the ITV show was one of the best we have seen in years and it was later revealed that the two hour special was the most watched TV show of the year.

It was a turning of the tables, as during the initial rounds of The Voice, they crept up and then overtook BGT in terms of viewing figures, but the shine seemed to wear off for fans once the live shows started.

On his comeback with BGT during an interview with Radio 4′s Today show, Simon said:

“When The Voice came along it was like, ‘Roll your sleeves up, we’re in for a bit of a punch-up.’ I’m smiling now.”

He went on to explain that he thinks the whole format of the rival show, is just a copy of his own format The X Factor (which he mostly poached from Simon Fuller’s Idol franchise).

He said: “That show puzzles me because it starts off and ‘it’s all about the voice’.

“So my first thought is, ‘Why isn’t this on radio?’ because what’s the point in looking at them. Then suddenly I’m watching it a week or two weeks ago and it’s the same as The X Factor.

“They’ve got dancers behind them, graphics, lights. Same show.”

He continued:

“I see a lot of shows trying to rip us off. If you try and rip somebody off it always looks like a bad copy.

“You’ve got to find a different way of doing things.”

We have to admit we do find Cowell’s comments slightly hypocritical, considering the fact that he once faced legal action from his former pal Simon Fuller, because the X Factor format was so similar to Pop Idol.

And let’s face it, his unsuccessful series ‘Grease Is The Word’ for ITV was a poor copy of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s search for a musical star series’ that were running on BBC One at the time.
