X Factor: Steve Brookstein has Twitter row with One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson’s mum

Steve Brookstein and Louis Tomlinson’s mum have argued on Twitter.

The original X Factor winner referred to the first audition of the One Direction member and described him as the “luckiest man in music” for landing a record deal with Simon Cowell’s SYCO.

Louis’ mum was quick to defend her son and addressing Brookstein, she replied:

“Hi I’m Louis’s mum. My family have always liked you and bought your records. Why be so cruel?

“Why shame him in public? He was sad about his audition. He was incredibly nervous. Listen to his YouTube.

“He is 18 Steve! I honestly thought you were a nice bloke. Sadly for us now what we were told about you seems accurate.”

Brookstein refused to back down and insisted that Louis needs singing lessons before he embarks on his music career. He wrote:

“If you are Louis’s mum. Get the poor lad some singing lessons for Christmas. A couple of dozen at least,” he said.

“I’ve heard his YouTube. Auto-Tune all over it. I don’t blame him. I blame Simon [Cowell] for putting him in the public eye.

“If he was a builder he wouldn’t be able to work on a house. He would need to learn his trade. Why do you think this is ok? Listen, he is a rouge trader. A Mickey Mouse cowboy builder. Don’t blame me for exposing his poor workmanship. End of.”

He also tweeted Tomlinson directly, saying:

“You have a great opportunity. Take singing lessons and become a proper singer. Work on your breathing and support.”

Tomlinson joked:

“Steve you’re my idol!”

Now before you all start spouting hate at Steve, have a listen to Louis’ audition below and let us know who you agree with.

Steve Brookstein is just jealous because One Direction are bigger now than he has ever been.
How dare he have the cheek to talk to Louis like that. Hope Louis pays no attention because Steve is a bitter old man!
    Love you Louis

  2. Becaa says:

  4. rebecca says:

steve is a dope..where is he now louis audiditon was really good x

  5. David says:

Wow. These fans who have posted so far are delusional. Louis seems like a super nice kid, but that video clip shows that he is a below average singer who got quite lucky. Steve is allowed to give his honest opinion, just like anyone else.

  6. Gavin says:

1 direction are just a poor mans take that

  7. Frankie says:

Fair enough that steve is allowed his own opinion, but he doesn’t need to go posting it all over twitter in such a harsh way! Seems like he’s trying to put himself back in the public eye after seeing how successful one direction are and how his career has failed…

  8. ssssssssssssst says:

Nice enough voice, but he wouldn’t make it on his own. Still, I can’t believe Steve!

  9. Charlee says:

I think Steve is entitled to his own (if a bit mean) opinion. However, to use the ‘he’s only 18′ line is naive. If you audition then you have to expect publicity, good or bad. Although she’s not my favourite singer no-one cared when Cher was bad mouthed all over Twitter and in the press and she’s younger than Louis. He has major tuning issues but it doesn’t matter, he’s not the lead singer, he’s young and he appeals to the target audience of the band. Job done.

  10. Sandra says:

Louis’ audition was awful. He seems a lovely lad but he’s not a singer IMO. Steve’s spot on with what he said, but… he could just ‘sweeten’ how he says things for those who disagree with him. (And that goes for any of Steve’s knockers too- Unreality TV being one of them, some of the flack he gets (undeservedly) is disgraceful!)

  11. Kaja says:

He got a yes from all the judges… they obviously think he’s good. I agree that Louis isn’t the best singer in the world, far from it, but he is in a band now. When you’re in a band you don’t need to be an amazing singer. Give Louis a break, he’s fit and can sing decently.

  12. juju says:

although he could have said more politely, steve does have a point…

and i think louis is quite lucky cos hes ugly and cant sing well

  13. Vincent says:

Steve Brookstein’s career is in shambles so why are people listening to this dolt? :P

  14. Maureen says:

I’m not a Steve Brookstein fan, but he does have longevity on his side from before the X factor programme was aired and has continued with his region after the X factor programme album which was not a big seller and led to him departing company with Simon’s record company.

The problem with social websites facebook twitter bebo and numerous others is that everyone who joins them has a right to an opinion. They are there for you to give an opinion.

Someone said of me the other night they found that my rendition of song from musical theatre was like SUBO. So I felt insulted because my voice is a classical voice. When I sang a second peice the guy who said that apologised and confessed he’d spoken to early.Don’t get me wrong I like Susan Boyle but the guys listening here were looking out for someone to do a charity CD and didn’t specify what they were looking for. But in my view should have had a good enough ear to know what they were listening to.

Now lets get back to the audition in question its not a great audition, but this is no reflection on whether he’s a nice enough lad and whether or not he should or shouldn’t be in a boyband.

As a classical singer my German teachers two sons were both in school rock bands long before they were 15 or 16 and they have gone on to work with music today. One teachs the drums the other teachs guitar. Neither have great vocals but they both work in the industry.

Boyband singers don’t always have the best of voices and actually don’t need the best of voices to work in the industry, as the industry will use backing vocalists to sing in the place of voices which are not quite right. Its called dubbing in. When it comes to live work depending on how great the level of fault is they can easily tour with backing vocalists aswell, filling in where needed.

YEars ago I agreed to take some disabled people to a boyzone concert and I can tell you, backing vocalists were heavily used and it would have been very hard to decipher who was actually singing what. But with screaming youngsters in arena concert I doubt whether any of them would have been aware of it.

So Steve commented that he thought young louis needed singing lessons for a few years. This was not meant as an insult this was a genuine comment, from a genuine guy, I would have said the same. Because like Steve we are both speaking from experience.

You see Simon Cowell is on the other side of the fence, money making and that is something he personally has never denied. So training or spending on proper career development is furthest from his thoughts. The nearest is the inferior guidance given via the fast track cowboy route throughout the heat weeks and even then its for the programme and not real training.

I suspect that Steve regrets doing the X factor programme, because it has not rubbed off well on him. It certainlly did nothing for him as a songwriter, indeed the record company wanted nothing from him other than covers. So in fact Steve feels he didn’t get a fair crack at the whip on top of that Steve was dropped before the year was up, so no career plan was in the offing.

I also think Elton John summed up this programme very
well when he was talking with Piers Morgan of late, so if you can’t take the truth from a previous contestant, than take it from an established pro.

  15. Somebody’s a little jealouss

  16. Karina says:

I am a One Direction fan and Louis is my favourite I have to say. His first audition wasn’t great but I think that was partly nerves. I do agree that he’s not the best singer in the world but he’s a bad singer either. I’ve heard a lot worse who have been successful. I mean, Cheryl Cole isn’t the best singer in the world but she was in a very successful group and she’s done alright solo. Steve Brookstein is entitled to his opinion but he didn’t need to be so harsh and he didn’t have to argue back to Louis mum who was just defending her son like most mum’s would. And to be honest, no one these days need great voices to become successful because everyone lip sync’s… Even Cher Lloyd lip synced through parts of the song on one of her performances, Cheryl Cole lip synced when she performed on the x factor the other week, and so did Justin Bieber!! And like someone else said, You don’t need a great voice when in a group because you have the other people for support!!
    :)

  17. beth says:

Wasn’t steve brookstein the one who couldn’t sing and only won because he said he would propose to his girlfriend. Steve is just jealous because he knows louis careers going to be alot more sucessful than his. I really don’t know how he has the bare faced cheek to accuse anyone of not being able to sing. At the end of the day every single member of one direction got their off their own merit if he wasn’t good enough Simon would not of put him in the band.

  18. Veronica says:

I like One direction but Louis’ audition was terrible.
