Britain’s Got Talent: Sarah Ikumu STUNS as she gets Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer!

Britain’s Got Talent returned to ITV tonight, and what we love about the show is that it is basically open to anyone and everyone, and isn’t just limited to singing or dancing. Instead, it’s open for pretty much everything, and so for that reason we sometimes get someone who comes to the show and absolutely blows us away.

Tonight, 15-year-old student, Sarah Ikumu does exactly that. Sarah is currently at school studying for her GCSEs, but she has been harbouring a massive talent – the girl has a set of lungs on her and she can SING.

Speaking in her VT prior to her performance, Sarah said: “I live with my mum and dad. My mum is a carer, my dad is a HGV driver. I have got to keep positive, and I am hoping for the best”.

When Simon Cowell asked Sarah what she had chosen to sing and why, she said: “I think And I am Telling You is the best song for me as it shows my vocal abilities the best.”

Jennifer Hudson’s ‘And I Am Telling You’ is a massive undertaking for anyone. Even the most seasoned performer, and even the best singers out there would be pretty terrified of taking this song on. It’s such a technically complex song to sing and when Jennifer Holliday did the original so flawlessly, and then Jennifer Hudson picked it up and brought a whole new element to it, you kind of don’t want to mess it up.

Well, when Sarah said that she chose the song because it showed off her vocal range, she wasn’t messing around. Oh no, Sarah did not come to play as she belted the song out in such an incredible way and she put on an amazing performance.

Sarah certainly made the performance her own as parts of the song were a little deeper than the original. At first, Sarah started off okay, but when she got into her stride she absolutely killed it. The girl is talented, and with the right coaching and the right help, she could be very successful as there’s something there already.

Immediately following her performance, Simon Cowell wasted no time in hitting his Golden Buzzer for her, which means Sarah automatically earns herself a place in the Live Semi Finals, which are due to take place in a few weeks.

Here’s what the judges had to say:

  • David Williams: “It was fantastic Sarah, well done”.
  • Alesha Dixon: “You’re not allowed d to have that much talent at that age. I didn’t press that Golden Buzzer as I wanted Simon to press that Golen buzzer. I think you could go far and I think Simon could help you”.
  • Amanda Holden: “I was thrilled when you got the Golden buzzer, it was mind blowing. I can’t believe you’re only 15”.
  • Simon Cowell: “Sarah I have heard this sing a lot. It started off really well, and then it’s like you became possessed half way through. It was quite incredible. For someone of your age to stand on this stage with the nerves and pressure, to not only nail the song, but you also made it your song”.
