Liam Payne LOVED it when Jimmy Carr slated James Arthur at Brit Awards 2014

by Lisa McGarry

jimmy carr

Jimmy Carr caused a bit of a rucus when he presented an award at tonight’s Brit Awards ceremony.

The British comedian was there to present the gong for Best Video, which had been voted for by Twitter users around the world.

EXCLUSIVE: Joe McElderry says of fellow X Factor winner James Arthur, “People try to trip him up with negative comments!”

He started off on a controversial footing when greeting the star studded audience in London’s O2 Arena, saying:

“This is the biggest night of the year….for London’s drug dealers!”

He then turned his attention to X Factor boss Simon Cowell adding:

“Can we take a moment to congratulate Simon Cowell, he has become a father! I bet when he met his son for the first time he said ‘I don’t like you….I love you!'”

But it was his comments about former X Factor winner James Arthur that caused uproar online, as he went on:

“I am presenting the British Video award. It’s voted for by Twitter users so all we know for sure, is that James Arthur won’t have won!”

james arthur

Jimmy was of course referring to Arthur’s many, many Twitter controversies over the past few months.

He had a very public feud with Matt Cardle, blasted a number of journalists and other celebs, had a run in with One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson, got embroiled in a homophobia rap scandal and just last week he was attacked by a model who says she was seedily propositioned by the star.

However James’ fans didn’t take well to the slight and one hit out at the comedian saying:

“jimmy carr I officially hate you what the fudge does James Arthur got to do with your low life haha f*ck you”

Another posted:

“Jimmy Carr can joke about James Arthur, but just wait until next year.. He’s going to take over the brits! <3 @JamesArthur23”

Of course it isn’t the first time that Jimmy has slated James. Just a few months ago he tweeted his followers saying:

“James Arthur has once again apologised to fans for his remarks. Fine James. But where’s the apology for your album?”

Carr has his supporters too though and many viewers appreciated the dig it seems.

One tweeted about the comic saying:

“Jimmy Carr getting hate for the truth. Maybe if James Arthur wasn’t such a homophobic and verbally abusive person then would be no jokes”

Another wrote:

“But can we discuss Jimmy Carr absolutely owning James Arthur ha ha, one of the best moments of the night !!!”

one direction

One Direction star Liam Payne also appreciated the comments, and after the band won the award and had their gong presented by Carr, the Little Things singer turned to the star and laughed:

“Jimmy Carr I am a fan, I am a very big fan. That’s ok.”

No one messes with Louis it seems.

What did you think of the insult? We just hope someone confiscated James’ phone…..for his own sake! Leave your comments below…

Lisa has been watching reality TV for too long now. She won't do any housework unless 'Big Brother' announces it over the tannoy and everything she does has to be put to a public vote!

  1. James Arthur fan on February 19, 2014 at 11:05 pm

1 Direction are such great role models(!) Liam standing on a balcony thinking he looks cool and now Harry up to all sorts in the loos!

  2. Angel on February 19, 2014 at 11:37 pm

One Direction are young lads and they handle their fame pretty well from what I’ve seen. James is a grown man and he should know better.

  3. john smith on February 20, 2014 at 3:16 am

He wasn’t even there and he is still the main talk over twitter lol

The thing is he is on a complete different level to any of the uk male artists nominated for best male. I think britain showed our selfs to have shit talent with the acts we had performing. we should have people like ed sheeran adele james arthur real vocalists and artist people who can play unplugged live and have a room of people in ore of them.

you cant say either one of them people can’t do that that is why they are huge all around the world james aint as big as adele or ed but his fan base has grown even after everything most his fans are in the rest of europe and the US

  4. Ray Charles on February 20, 2014 at 5:30 am

So well said John Smith! Jim Carr’s joke about drug dealers was actually funny, too.

  5. Dee Lafferty on February 20, 2014 at 8:14 am

Would everyone just stop and think about how we are all being manipulated by the media! James is not the first artist to reply to negative comments! Who cares about twitter! It’s all about the music! You don’t need a Brit award to prove you’ve got talent! Oh, and I must have missed your man, Carr’s comments when I was fast forwarding through the parts of the show I didn’t like!

  6. jenni on February 20, 2014 at 8:58 am

James Arthur is I am afraid fast becoming a laughing stock. So what if he has over 2million twitter followers its also because people are nosy and want to have a laugh when he starts his twitter rants. He is rapidly becoming more known for that then his music.

  7. Grace on February 20, 2014 at 1:02 pm

Why was Jimmy Carr, a tax dodger, even allowed to present an award at the Brits? Unlike Mr Carr, James Arthur has never been vilified in the press for doing anything illegal. His ‘sin’ is simply that he has a short fuse when it comes to defending himself over downright lies and childish bullying over his looks. Oh, and according to Mickey Worthless, that he can’t be any good because he is the product of the X Factor. His single ‘Recovery’ from his brilliant self titled album, still managed to get into the Top 40 even without being given any air time at all.

  8. Sarah Westwood on February 20, 2014 at 1:20 pm

Angel, 1D are now young men who are marketed as role models for teenagers – they are not little school boys, they are old enough to know better! They have become full of themselves after believing too much in their own hype! It is ironic that Justin Bieber was brought up by James Corden to them as Harry is also doing drugs now! How long will it be before he is arrested for a drugs connected crime?! @ John Smith – you are so right! The organisers must have excluded James Arthur to give the other artists a chance this year – next year is bound to be James’s year at The Brits!

  9. james brown on February 20, 2014 at 1:22 pm

i get that u think that but you don’t have to like the guy to realise he is one of a kind he is a complete different breed of musician. and it aint people being nosey its cause his talent i mean he didn’t exactly get where he is in his looks he is playing a sold out Europe tour won 2 awards one for best international artist the us cant wait to have him. so many people in the comments of his vids say i don’t like him but then say bit wow that was just incredibly disgustingly good he when he dose unplugged he is so sickk the people who leave comments like ur aint herd his music and his older music he had a hard life not just been handed on a plate to him been playing music in bands since he was 15

    rant over

  10. Angel on February 20, 2014 at 2:02 pm

Sarah Westwood – James is the one with the massive ego. He is a joke in the music industry now. Radio won’t touch his music and award shows like the Brits are making fun of him. His career is over.

  11. Angel on February 20, 2014 at 2:05 pm

Grace – No airtime? He had a performance on X Factor in front of millions of people. Recovery was a flop, just like his album.

  12. Jane on February 20, 2014 at 2:49 pm

John Smith I totally agree with you. James Arthur is absolutely amazing it should be about the music. Yes Jimmy Carr is not exactly squeaky clean and as for Liam Payne he has been in trouble recently too for supporting homophobes and dangerously standing on a balcony so they should both be a bit more sympathetic to James who has been vilified by the media for standing up for himself. personally I think he is simply amazing and is in a class of his own.He is too good for the BRITS

  13. Grace on February 20, 2014 at 4:04 pm

Angel – If you do your homework, James Arthur’s mainly self penned album went straight into the charts at no. 2, just behind Eminem. I don’t call that a flop. When I said his single ‘Recovery’ didn’t get any air time I was referring to the radio stations. His X Factor appearance was a fiasco. His record wasn’t plugged. The only thing being plugged was his apology for his so called past misdemeanours. No doubt the same will happen to his next single ‘Get Down’. I don’t understand why listeners should be deprived of hearing such a talented artist because the press have decided they need a punch bag.

  14. Grace on February 20, 2014 at 4:27 pm

Jenni – I agree with you that James Arthur is becoming more known (in this country) for his twitter rants than for his music.
But why is that, do you think? It’s because the British press is not interested in telling their readers of the two European awards that he received at the end of last year. Nor have they been quick to tell us of his sell out tour in both the UK and Europe,- brilliant, by the way. I was lucky enough to get seats, as I booked them as soon as they were released.
And I am still awaiting a story about the concert he gave in Bethnal Green last December, the proceeds of which he donated to his favourite charity ‘Crisis’.
Luckily, there millions of people throughout Europe who appreciate good, soulful and meaningful music. I can’t see him being forgotten just yet.

  15. Angel on February 20, 2014 at 4:40 pm

Grace – His album peaked high yes, but with no longevity and average sales. Little Mix and Matt Cardle’s debuts did much better. One Direction have 3 albums ahead of him in the charts. Embarrassing.

  16. Hantsm on February 20, 2014 at 6:48 pm

Angel I think I would be right in saying you are not a James Arthur fan, so why are you so bothered about him, Recovery was an amazing song , and hey it was Gary Barlow on Xfaxtor who told James not to let anyone change the way he sang etc! Etc! And you can look this up. Everybody was behind him but he made a few mistakes, who doesn’t, when I followed 1D I couldn’t believe some of the things Harry said on Twitter, as for Jimmy Carr well I didn’t think a grown man could be so petty and superficial, this is a man who was a tax dodger is this the kind of person we want our children looking up to. James tries to help the homeless, he has also helped people who are looking for support and they get it through his music. James has so much talent Britain needs to be there for there own. As the saying goes ” let him who has not sinned cast the first stone

  17. wendiwoo on February 20, 2014 at 6:52 pm

Oh dear ….once again …lets have a pop at James Arthur ….zzzzz James is above most other singers in the uk right now .he is actually phenomenal his sell out tour of Europe is actually taking Europe by storm , he is truly doing amazingly well , hes .just won 3 major awards His career is no where near over , it actually is only just starting , anyone who has heard his album ….or seen him perform will tell you , his fans dont just love him ….the gigs are fulll of people screaming their hearts out that they love him , the room is like a massive love in and its because the ridiculous witch hunt that has taken over his suberb unique talent ,,,,, people are fed up of it and want to show their love and support for this amazing singer …..he is taking Europe by storm ….sit back fasten your seat belts ….watch him soar ….♡!,

  18. whatever on February 20, 2014 at 7:56 pm

Liam Payne has made 1 or 2 slips (I agree), so it seems that some people here think that he should be criticised & crucified. But those same people seem to give James Arthur some leeway in the same department: he has attacked people repeatedly ever since he won on the X factor, and displayed poor judgement over & over again, but we should overlook this because he is James Arthur, the second coming of great music… Double standart much?

I would never knock someone down for enjoying James’ music, it’s a matter of taste & perfectly fine.
Excusing his behaviour and overlooking how full of himself he seems to be (while accusing someone else of lacking modesty): that I can’t accept.

That being said: Joking about hims seems a bit cheap & easy right now. Maybe the Brit joke wasn’t really necessary.

  19. Question? on February 21, 2014 at 1:47 am

Can’t everyone just agree to disagree? Some people like James Arthur, some people don’t. For some people his music would be the reason for that and for some people it would be his personality and/or stories in the press. Sitting around making predictions about how he’s ‘ruined his career’ are ridiculous because even if you aren’t a fan there are lot’s of people that are. If you don’t like him, ignore him, and if you do like him, continue to enjoy him.
As for Liam Payne and Jimmy Carr… Does it really matter?

  20. DonJuan on February 21, 2014 at 2:44 am

Hahahaha! I think it was hilarious! And very true. I’m not a huge fan of 1D but they have millions of fans and twitter followers and they sell millions of records. But twitter followers does not always mean fans. James Arthur has twitter followers mostly to see what rant or insult he is going to give next. If all his followers were fans then his album and singles would be in the charts instead of falling off the bottom.
And please stop saying his tour is sold out….there were venues still with tickets not sold.
And also please stop saying there is a press witch hunt against him because there isn’t. He has brought all the press attention on himself since he won the show. He needs to take responsibility instead of blaming everyone else all the time. That ‘poor me’ attitude is just lame.
And one more thing…his ‘fans’ should stop attacking everyone who doesn’t like him. You will not change our minds. And you just make yourselves look bad. Grow up and realize that a lot of people who like good music just don’t like him.
I’d say that his actions since he has won the show more than deserved the remark from Jimmy Carr. And he was right. And it was funny.

James Arthur you done really well you are the best went to your concert in Blackpool it was totally full with screaming fans saying I love you no matter what you do your fans are behind you all the way… and you always say sorry which is a good thing…

    love you James Arthur xxxx

    love you James Arthur xxxx

  23. Lynne on February 21, 2014 at 12:53 pm

James Arthur is the real deal. I too was at one of his sold out gigs. He was sensational. That guy is so multi-talented. Who knew he could rock like that!! Regardless of the skewed press and slanderous reports, his fan base will remain right behind him and continue to reject trolls. They will not change our minds. Well done also, James for achieving 3 awards recently for best international artist and best single. It is impressive how you took responsibility for your mistake and apologised and regardless of the unbalanced news reports and lack of promotion you still managed to chart respectably within the top 20 and acheive a No2 album spot. Not only that… it is impressive that your album bagged a GOLD in Poland too. Keep going James.

  24. rkane44 on February 21, 2014 at 11:30 pm

Exactly John Smith, JA wasn’t even their and the support for him on here in response to this article, is evident of his popularity. LOL… most people on here are talking about and supporting JA once again. Who cares about Carr’s or Liam’s comments. Or anyone who is not a fan for that matter! My friends and I just appreciate how crazy, crazy talented JA is! We go wild for edgy, soulful and passionate music… what a superstar he is. Rock, rap, acoustic, etc… his talent is so diverse. Being fans of Sheeran, Adele, You Me At Six and Mackelmore, JA can completely compete with any of these highly talented artists in our opinion. I’d argue people can clearly observe JA has longevity, especially with his diverse target audience. JA has already acheived impressive awards so far and no doubt their will be plenty more to come. JA has just begun. Yes he has made a few mistakes, like us all… but a few set backs certainly won’t keep JA down.

he is sickk whats the crack.

his single didn’t come for 2 weeks after his x factor performance and he done 2 giggs before it got to 19 but it was the album track which people with album obviously already have would of been top 5 if the single came out 2 days before x factor they just marketed it wrong but they had to do it cause of everything that happened it wouldnt been right him going out and singing yntsly after all the shit that happened its done better than yntsl if u are judging on popularity and you tube view and that was with 1 tv performance

  27. wedontgetdown on February 22, 2014 at 8:43 pm

Hey congrats Arthur on getting a mention on the Brits, despite your absence!! Overall, their comments are inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Media sensationalism once again – portraying Carr’s joke as a vicious attack, by employing emotive terminology such as: ‘slated’ and ‘insult.’ Arthur has hardly been ‘slated.’

Not so long ago the trashy press used the same negative tactics to disrespect and generate readership with 1D. The usual red top rags claimed Carr had: ‘hammered’ and ‘kicked’ 1D, when Carr, essentially, ridiculed them, for what he perceived as their immaturity and dress sense.

Subsequent to Arthur’s great sense of humour, nevertheless, I’m not entirely convinced that Arthur would not have engaged in some kind of witty repartee himself, had he been present.

Similarly, it appears that Arthur is doing a lot of laughing himself right now, that’s for sure. Having just been presented with his Sold Out Tour Award! Equally, with a fully booked diary to be proud about, throughout 2014 and appearing as the opening act, at the star-studded Newmarket Racecourse soon, seems to me Arthur has absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about and a lot to be cheerful about.

  28. DonJuan on February 23, 2014 at 3:20 am

Oh no doubt he would have engaged in some kind of repartee. Not sure about the witty part. I’m surprised he hasn’t responded in his usual manner by telling off Jimmy Carr and calling him a few names on twitter. Management must have changed his password. Or maybe his new PA did. Hahaha!

And he was just presented with his sold out tour award?? what?? What is that? Hard to do when it wasn’t sold out. And a fully booked diary?..all through 2014?? Haha! Sure…

  29. wedontgetdown on February 23, 2014 at 4:34 pm

Clearly you are not sure about the witty element. I am absolutely sure, having met him. I too am surprised Arthur hasn’t felt the need to assert himself, on this occasion, which thus, justifies my argument that I have already stated: Arthur may have also found the humour in it. (Either that, or he simply isn’t affected by the remark). Evidently, his password has not been changed, subsequent to Arthur’s continual use of his twitter lately.

To address your question regarding his sold out tour, that you also seem unsure about, if you research Arthur’s awards, you will discover that he has indeed been awarded for his sold out tour. Equally, you will also need to investigate Arthur’s HQ itinerary, in an attempt to update yourself, with his fully booked diary in 2014, given you are taking a keen interest in him.

Hope that clears up any confusion for you.

  30. DonJuan on February 25, 2014 at 12:18 am

Oh well, if someone has met him then that certainly would qualify them for knowing him so well. And of course everything on his twitter account is written by him. Oh no wait….didn’t he just say a while ago that his PA has access? I’m confused now. Does he or doesn’t he? Only his PA knows for sure? Or perhaps the person who has met him once has control of it now.

Very strange that his tour would be called sold out when people I know who research such things found that at most venues there were tickets available the afternoons of his concerts. How would that be possible if it were sold out? Hmmm….only explanation….it wasn’t. See how this works? Someone says they have met him and I have people who know things too.

Investigate Arthur’s HQ? What?? 365 days in a year, 52 weeks…52 weekends….his diary is fully booked for 2014 is it? Really? Sure….no confusion here. Nice try though.

  31. rkane44 on February 25, 2014 at 4:19 pm

Not only do you sound confused but you are ranting with all kinds of assumtions. Why do you care so much about James. Wedontgetdown is correct. You only need to look at his scheduling online or watch interviews with James confirming his diary. Not sure why you are ranting “365 days in a year” etc. Also, James has won an award for sold out tour. We cannot help you with your trust issues and aggression on here. Looks to me that wedontgetdown has turned out to be brighter than you thought and has justified this case better than you have. I hope wedontgetdown does not dignify your ranting with a response. I know I’m going to let you have the last word here, as you appear so unbalanced and controlling you will have to respond once again.

  32. Hantsm on February 27, 2014 at 8:56 am

Sounds like somebody needs to get a life Don Juan, you really aren’t as amusing as you think you are, James is doing fine it doesn’t really matter who knows who,or who knows what, nobody can take away the fact that he is very talented and has an amazing voice, so just stop trying to put him down it’s not working

  33. wedontgetdown on February 27, 2014 at 5:12 pm

So well said Hantsm… it is not working for DonJuan.

Thanks rkane44… my thoughts entirely. I am happy with my response and feel no need to continue, regardless.
    Ta Ta 🙂
