Directioners, you’ll be ecstatic to know that One Direction’s latest album release, Midnight Memories has become the biggest selling album in the UK of 2013.
In just five weeks, the album has shifted almost 700,000 copies in the UK and has subsequently become the biggest selling album of 2013.
The lads – Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson have managed to swipe the crown from Emeli Sande and her debut album, Our Version of Events.
In total, 685,000 copies of the album have been sold to date so far.
Released on November 25 in the UK, Midnight Memories debuted at number 1 on the Official Albums Chart with over 237,000 copies sold in its first week. So much so, the album also became the fastest seller of the year.
However, it isn’t all bad for Emeli Sande as her debut album was released back at the beginning of last year and has still managed to reign supreme until now. Emeli is in second place with a not-so-shabby total of 683,000 copies. To date, the album has sold more than 2.07 million copies in the UK which is quite the feat for Sande.
Speaking to OfficialCharts.com, Liam said: “This tops an amazing year for us! We’re so excited to have the biggest selling album in the UK this year, especially with a record we are all so proud of. We’d like to thank everyone who has bought the album, it really means a lot to us”.
Official Charts Company chief executive, Martin Talbot added: “Hearty congratulations should go to One Direction. It is a huge honour to become the biggest seller of any year. To do so in such a short amount of time is a very impressive achievement”.
Whilst we’re continuing with the accolades, Midnight Memories is officially the fastest selling album of 1D’s career. Looking at first week sales alone, 2011s Up All Night sold 139,000 copies and 2012’s Take Me Home sold 155,000 copies whilst Midnight Memories sold 237,000 copies in its first week.
Well done 1D!
