Harry Styles is opening up about the inspiration for his debut single “Sign of the Times,” and it turns out the song is even darker than we first thought.
Styles revealed what the song is actually about in a candid new interview with Rolling Stone, admitting that he wrote the track about a new mum who’s told she only has a matter of minutes to live and has to say goodbye to her baby.
“‘Sign of the Times’ came from ‘This isn’t the first time we’ve been in a hard time, and it’s not going to be the last time,’” Harry said when asked about his inspiration behind his first solo track.
“The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there’s a complication,” he then continued of the heart-breaking story behind the song, which marks the lead single from his self-titled album due out next month.
“The mother is told, ‘The child is fine, but you’re not going to make it.’ The mother has five minutes to tell the child, ‘Go forth and conquer.’” Woah!
Understandably, fans were a little thrown off by the confession. Some praised the singer for writing a song about such dark subject matter, while others were a little thrown off by the revelation.
“Finally a young artist with something to say. @Harry_Styles Sign of The Times a dying mother’s parting words to her newborn. So #beautiful,” @HarryClinton16 tweeted of Styles, praising the singer for putting forward such an important message.
However, others weren’t so convinced.
“The fact that harry said SOTT is [about] a mother dying during childbirth is a little unsettling ???” @SUBURBANREJECTS wrote.
