Earlier this year, One Direction singer Niall Horan revealed to his fans that he was being treated for acid reflux, which, if extreme, can cause a number of worrying symptoms.
The condition occurs when stomach acid leaks – sometimes as a result of a hiatus hernia – into surrounding tissue, and when it does, it can cause painful burns.
So of course, in the case of acid reflux, the tissue that sustains the damage is in the oesophagus and the throat…
And for Niall Horan, that in and of itself is worrying because obviously as he’s a singer, anything that could present a hazard to his voice is a matter of concern.
However, also worrying for sufferers is the fact that the symptoms of acid reflux can mimic a heart attack…
The patient may have severe chest pain that even radiates to the arms, jaw or ears, and of course, nausea and vomiting can also occur during an episode of reflux.
Usually, doctors will first try to settle the condition with antacid medication, but if that fails to provide relief, then they may consider surgery…
Such procedures can include strengthening the muscle at the top of the stomach in a bid to prevent acid leaking out. And if a hiatus hernia is causing the issue, that could be repaired.
However, also as a first-line treatment, doctors will have told Niall that he needs to moderate his diet…
So on the ‘banned’ list will be spicy foods, fatty foods and alcohol, and he will have also been advised to avoid eating anything in the few hours before he goes to bed.
Horan may also have been told to sleep propped up on pillows so that it’s more difficult for acid to leak out from his oesophagus.
But it seems that as yet, all of the treatment that Niall Horan has been having has had little effect, given he’s revealed on Twitter that he still suffers from acid reflux.
That came about after singer Charlie Puth tweeted Niall last night, writing, hey “@NiallOfficial i’m buying you a beer tonight.”
To that, Horan replied, “@charlieputh I’m currently off the beer coz I’ve got terrible acid reflux hahaha.”
He added, “But I appreciate the offer. Let’s have a water hahaha.”
Oh bless him! Here’s hoping doctors can help Niall Horan to find a treatment that works for him so that he can start having the odd pint or two again.
