Zayn Malik‬, Taylor Swift‬ BLOW UP the ‘net! WATCH Fifty Shades Darker ‘I Don’t Wanna Live Forever’

by Lynn Rowlands

There has been a Goldilocks amount of hype surrounding Zayn Malik and Taylor Swift’s ‘I Don’t Wanna Live Forever’, which is of course the soundtrack for the Fifty Shades Darker movie.

And obviously by ‘Goldilocks’ I mean just right; the marketing hasn’t been heavy-handed, and nor has it been understated…

In my view, by and large, it’s been a wait-and-see approach. And now I’ve seen it, I can see why. Because the improbable pairing of Zayn Malik and Taylor Swift was either going to be ridiculous or brilliant, and for me, it’s brilliant. Which has come as a shock.

Because it’s perhaps analogous to an Ozzy Osbourne and Bonnie Langford collaboration – for those of you who don’t remember Bonnie from her singing days, Google her, but she’s now playing Carmel in EastEnders – which is to say, pretty dang unlikely…

Because in all honesty, Zayn Malik is all about the dark, the brooding, the drug and sex references, the swearing and so forth, whereas in Taylor’s music, you’re more likely to hear her mention puppies and flowers and days by the sea with gal pals.

Yes she sings about heartbreak etc., but even when she’s trying to hint at ‘dark’, as per ‘Bad Blood’, it’s still something you’d play at a primary school disco. The same can’t be said for Zayn’s PillowTalk.

And I would guess that a Zayn Malik and Taylor Swift collab wouldn’t have happened anywhere other than Family Guy had it not been for the fact that Zayn’s gorgeous girlfriend Gigi Hadid is BFFs with Taylor and put forward the idea…

And given that ‘I Don’t Wanna Live Forever’ is the result, then my vote goes to Gigi being in charge of all Zayn’s collaborations in future.

It’s genuinely stunning, and for me, while Taylor doesn’t exude the ‘darkness’ or the eroticism in the video that Zayn does – and while he does it effortlessly, Taylor’s efforts to do so feel a tad more contrived – nonetheless if there was a point at which we can in the future say, ‘Yep that’s where Taylor moved out of the house next door’, then this is surely it.

Everything about the song and the video is quality of the highest order. It’s artistic, it’s emotive, it’s simple, it’s effective, and it’s got earworm catchiness without being annoying. So I have no doubt it’s going to No1 and both Taylor and Zayn need to start making spaces for the awards that are no doubt headed their way for it. As do the creative bods who came up with the goods that facilitated it all.
