Last night’s episode of EastEnders was, for me at any rate, one of THE best of all time as I sat through the hour holding my breath every single time there was the potential for a fatal accident involving Mitchell sisters Ronnie and Roxy.
So that all started when the girls set off to the wedding venue in the vintage convertible motor their cousin Phil had splashed out on, which a no doubt hungover Roxy was driving…
It was a left-hand drive model, she’d been at the nose candy and as mentioned, the booze the night before, so the potential for a fatal crash was of course there.
However, that didn’t happen and after a visit to Phil in hospital, the sisters arrived at the venue. And after some will-they-won’t-they drama, Ronnie and Jack were married.
But then came a scene in which Ronnie and Roxy took a couple of bottles of champagne up to the highest point of the building to sit precariously balanced on a crumbling balustrade of some kind…
And as they drunkenly swayed about, my underwear slowly began disappearing into a crevice it had no right to be in as I thought, ‘This is it, they’re going to fall… They’re going home in jam jars…’
But again, no, and off the girls went back into the posh hotel. However, then they spotted the swimming pool. And so then, pun intended, my heart sank.
And sure enough, a drunk Roxy decided to leave Max Branning waiting in her hotel bed a little longer – which speaks volumes about her mental state surely – while she had a dip in the pool, fully clothed save for the teeny tiny shrug she cast aside.
However, though we didn’t see what happened, Roxy must have hit her head or some such when she dived in, because she never resurfaced…
So while Ronnie fiddled somewhat incomprehensibly with something at the front of her bridal gown, evidently ignoring the zip at the back, she eventually noticed that Roxy hadn’t bobbed back up and she dived in.
A truly tense underwater struggled then ensued – I genuinely don’t think I took a breath for ages – in which Ronnie became entangled in her own wedding dress as she tried to get to Roxy…
But alas, the weight of her dress dragged her down, and in the closing scenes, it was clear both Ronnie and Roxy were dead.
Meanwhile though, EastEnders bosses teased an alternate ending would be shown on Snapchat, so of course, millions of us waited to see it. Some more patiently than others.
But when it finally arrived, the build-up to the clip was infinitely more extensive than the alternate action, which lasted a matter of seconds and showed Roxy dead but Ronnie alive.
Here’s a look at it…

On Twitter though, the reaction was very much mixed, and while some hailed the main episode a triumph, others were just devastated that Ronnie and Roxy had been killed off.
However, it’s probably fair to say that not many EastEnders viewers were happy about the alternative ending footage.
Glad I went to bed and never waited for the #eastenders alternative ending on snapchat what a piece of crap it was

What did you think of last night’s EastEnders and of Ronnie and Roxy’s deaths? And what of the alternate ending scenes?
