James Byron certainly brought something very different to the stage when he performed on The Voice this evening.
The 24 year old singer gave an emotional rendition of Crybaby for the panel and admitted beforehand that he was glad to be judged purely on his vocals, as his appearance has caused so many problems in the past.
The young man looked very much like a young woman and before performing he admitted:
“Singing is really important to me. It gave me a voice, because I am quote a shy person but when I sing something that I really believe in that’s very empowering.”
“I was bullied when I was growing up because of the way I look and that kind of stunted my confidence quite a lot. I have always been quite feminine and people confuse me for a woman quite a lot.”
“You have to carry on with life, you can’t let things in your past get to you all the time and music made me feel better. I have grown with music and music has grown with me.”
“Tonight is a very special night for me. It is the first time I will get judged on the way I sing and not the way I look.”
The coaches were reticent to turn for Byron, as they were unsure of his gender. Will.i.am spun at the last minute, to offer him a place in his team.
Kylie Minogue said:
“That was a really amazing performance. We were all perplexed, we didn’t know if it was a man or a woman.”
Tom Jones said:
“There are times when you sound like a man, and times when you sound like a woman. There is nothing wrong with that. It makes it more interesting for me. Now I wish I had pressed my button. I loved it.”
“I will tell you why I turned around. You sing magnificently and I wanted to stack up my female singers to compete with Tom’s female singers. The I turned around and you’re a boy but that’s all good because you sound like a girl and we can accomplish the same thing. You sounded fantastic!”
