Tom Barnwell made quite the impression on Will.i.am on tonight’s episode of The Voice.
The 26 year old singer, from Stratford upon Avon works as an ambulance controller by day but really wants to be a world famous singer and he started his journey by giving Will a great ego stroke and performing American Boy – which of course the Black Eyed Peas star co-wrote – for the panel.
Before singing Tom explained:
“I take my job very seriously, because sometimes it can be life or death. When someone calls 999 it is my job to allocate the nearest ambulance to the call, so they get there as soon as possible. The time I appreciate that my job is important is not when I’m there but when I am on the way home and I am thinking about everything that happened on that day.”
“I have always wanted to sing, ever since I was a little boy. I have never done anything big but it’s what I want to do.”
“I am used to dealing with stress on a daily basis but this is a totally different kind of pressure.”
As Barnwell sang, Will turned first, followed – eventually – by all three coaches.
He also inspired a little bit of a disco, as Will, Kylie Minogue and Ricky Wilson all enjoyed a bit of a boogie.
Tom Jones teased the singer saying:
“I didn’t get up to dance because I was still listening and looking. It’s not that I can’t dance, I can still dance but I loved the way you sound.”
“You sounded different, you had a fresh approach which is great. I liked the whole thing.”
Ricky Wilson gushed:
“It was really great, that was the first time I got up to dance. I can’t remember why I turned, it just happened. It was really good, we all enjoyed it obviously. You were singing from your heart and it was really good.”
Will.i.am gave a great pitch though and said:
“You were really good. I liked the Tom touch you added to it.”
“That song that you sang it means a lot to me. It was 2006 and I started working on this beat and then John Legend comes in and says ‘I have this girl named Estelle, can she have that?’. It turned into American Boy.”
“That all happened in an hour and a half. My point is, I know how to do that kind of stuff all day in an hour and a half.”
Of course Tom went with Will….it was the obvious choice!
