The Originals spoilers: Nina Dobrev & Ian Somerhalder joining after Vampire Diaries cancellation?

by Emily H

The Vampire Diaries is coming to an end, but could Ian Somerhalder & Nina Dobrev be heading to The Originals?

According to reports, Ian and Nina could be joining the vampire drama’s spinoff when season 8 of The CW drama ends, meaning we may not be saying goodbye to Damon and Elena just yet.

“After all is said and done and season 8 of TVD is over Ian may join the cast of The Originals,” Celeb Dirty Laundry reported of the possibility of the characters living on beyond The Vampire Diaries run.

As we previously reported, it’s thought that Dobrev will be bringing back Katherine to Mystic Falls when she returns for the finale, and it sounds like there may be a possibility that the actress could join her former on and off-screen boyfriend should he join the cast of The Originals.

“Working with Nina may not be ideal for Ian given their off-screen romantic history, but a paying acting job is better than being unemployed and auditioning for bit parts,” the site speculated, noting that Somerhalder may be looking for something similar now The CW show is ending.

Though Nina and Ian haven’t confirmed if they’ll be heading to The Originals after reuniting in The Vampire Diaries, moving to their show’s spinoff may not actually be the best idea, as The CW is still yet to renew the series beyond the upcoming 4th season.

Right now the future of The Originals is very much up in the air when it comes to whether or not the show will live on past season 4 and network executives have been speaking out about the possibility of cancellation for months.

“I hope The Originals can continue,” The CW President Mark Pedowitz said when asked about whether or not the vampire drama will be renewed or will follow TVD to its grave earlier this year. “A lot of it depends on its performance. I’m counting on [creator Julie Plec] to deliver for this season.”

The Vampire Diaries airs on Friday nights on The CW while season 4 of The Originals is set to premiere on March 17.
