Fans of One Direction will of course know that the lads have often been compared to The Beatles…
However, Take That singer Robbie Williams reckons that the One Direction boys, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik, are rather more like the Spice Girls!
However, he wasn’t actually implying that they’re big girls, and was simply pointing out the phenomenon that they’ve become, which is akin to the global success and popularity of the Spice Girls in the 90s.
And it’s fair comment really, given what the boys have achieved in a remarkably short space of time…
Here’s what their Wiki page says of their runaway success…
Propelled to international success by the power of social media, One Direction are often described as sparking the resurgence in the boy band concept, and of forming part of a new “British Invasion” in the United States.
Their achievements include a BRIT Award and 3 MTV Video Music Awards. As of November 2012, the boy band have sold over 15 million records worldwide. According to Nick Gatfield, the chairman and chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment UK, One Direction represented a $50 million business empire by June 2012.
They were proclaimed 2012’s ‘Top New Artist’ by Billboard while The Huffington Post named 2012 “The Year of One Direction”.
Of One Direction, Robbie told TV Biz, “They’re quite a power in the way the Spice Girls were.
“The Spice Girls took over the world and won and I think the One Direction boys have a similar chemistry.”
And while on the subject of chemistry, Robbie went on to reveal – as if we didn’t already know – that 1D singer Harry Styles is a bit of a babe magnet.
He said, “He’s a magnet like I’ve never seen before. I don’t think Harry needs any tips from me.
“He’s beguiling, and so are One Direction. I wasn’t him when I was 18.
“That didn’t happen to me.”
Aww bless him. Here’s a reminder of Robbie singing with 1D…
