Marlon McKenzie has admitted that he was glad when the X Factor judges changed the rules regarding categories this year.
The 28 year old Mancunian singer, was seen making enjoying his THIRD audition on last night’s show, he previously made it through to bootcamp in both 2005 and 2008, but failed to make it as far as the live shows. This year Marlon sang Ain’t No Sunshine for the panel, and what should have been a cheesy performance, was actually quite amazing. Simon Cowell enthused:
“’I’ve got to be honest, when you said you were going to sing Ain’t No Sunshine, I thought oh god we’re going to hear that same old version we’ve heard thousands of times. The fact that you came with your own version of it, actually made the song sound incredibly current, I’ve got a good feeling about you as a person.”
When he tried out, the dad of two assumed he would be placed with the over 25’s, but Cowell later changed the age limit for the older group to Over 28s, meaning that Marlon scraped into the boys category by the skin of his teeth.
He was happy with the move and told The Sun:
“It would be better for me to be one of the boys. For the teenage girls to think of me as one of the boys. It could potentially be like, ‘It’s not cool to like the older ones’.”
On how he hopes to better his previous performances on the show, Marlon added:
“I have just been trying to stand out as much as possible. Just making sure I’m dressed to impress. Everybody’s been saying that I’m looking different. I think I’ve grown.”
The newly single singer also heaped praise on Manchester guest judge Nicole Scherzinger saying:
“Everybody loved Nicole there, she was beautiful. She’s auditioned for Popstars in America so she knows how it feels.
“It’s the same thing for Cheryl Cole – they know how nervous everyone is, so they cut people some slack.”
