As we reported yesterday, music manager and X Factor judge Louis Walsh received a payout of £400,000 from The Sun newspaper after he took the tabloid to court over an article they printed after Walsh was accused of sexually assaulting homeless Leonard Watters.
Watters was jailed for six months earlier this year when he admitted making up the allegation, but he is now out of prison.
The Mirror today reports, “Music promoter Louis said he was left suicidal when the paper claimed he groped deranged Leonard Watters in the toilets of a nightclub.”
Speaking to the paper after winning his case against The Sun, Louis said, “Simon called me today, so did Gary Barlow, so did Piers Morgan. All these people.
“People have come out of the woodwork supporting me…
“And Simon is a really good friend of mine. He knows me and knew. He just felt really sorry for me.
“He knew I was in a very bad place. Everybody around me has been a million percent supportive.”
After the case ended, Eoin McCullough, the senior counsel for News Group Newspapers, read out a statement to the High Court.
He said, “The Sun published an article in its editions of 23 June 2011, in which we reported that Louis Walsh was being investigated in relation to a sexual assault on Leonard Watters.
“In fact it transpired that Leonard Watters had made a false statement to An Garda Siochana, and he has since been convicted in relation to this matter.
“The Sun fully accepts that the alleged assault did not occur in the first place and Louis Walsh is entirely innocent of any such assault.
“The Sun unreservedly apologies to Louis Walsh for any distress caused to him as a result of
