Nicole Scherzinger has proved that she is anything but under Simon Cowell’s thumb, and has spoken out in praise of Will.i.am this week.

The former Pussycat Dolls star may have worked on The X Factor for the past two years, and probably owes a fair bit of the credit for her solo success to her exposure on Cowell’s talent shows, but that doesn’t mean that she’s willing to leave her old friends behind her.

Word is that Simon and Will haven’t got on well ever since Cowell sacked Cheryl Cole from The X Factor USA, while she was under the Black Eyed Peas star’s management. The situation was only made worse when Will signed up for rival TV show The Voice, which will go head to head with Britain’s Got Talent for the second time next month.

However, Nicole still thinks that the singer, rapper and producer is an ‘inspiration’ and has teamed up with Will for a new track on his upcoming album ‘#willpower’.

The record is due for release next month and speaking to Capital FM, Scherzinger praised Will’s energy, saying:

“He’s just like this kind of crazy ball of light and energy that just bounces off the walls.”

The ‘Boomerang’ star added: “He never really shuts off, he’s always thinking, he’s always creating. And he’s inspiring to be around.”

Scherzinger reached out to her pal on Twitter earlier this month, as he celebrated his birthday and she tweeted:

“Happy Birthday @iamwill ! Love u like a brother! Sending u a big ole hug! XOXO
Love, Niki Sundae”

Meanwhile, Will cannot wait to return to UK TV screens on The Voice this Saturday and tweeted:

“Here we come…the dope funky 4…back for more…#returnofthevoice #theVOICEuk #saturday #dopeDAY”
